COLUMBIA, S.C. – Michigan State softball battled with a tough SEC opponent on Tuesday, March 8, falling 4-1 to South Carolina. The Spartans led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before a late rally by the Gamecocks.
A loss pushes Michigan State's record to 11-9 on the season before it heads to the UNCG Spartan Classic in Greensboro, North Carolina on Thursday, March 10 through Sunday, March 13.
MSU got a strong performance from sophomore Ashley Miller in the circle, striking out 10 Gamecock batters in six innings pitched. It's the eighth time this season that Miller has reached double digit strikeouts and it's her third straight game with 10 or more punch-outs.
Four different Spartans collected hits on Tuesday, with freshman Macy Lee, junior Camryn Wincher, senior Mackenzie Meech and fifth year Caitie Ladd all recording base knocks. Meech and Wincher each doubled for the Spartans. Sophomore Alexis Barroso drove in the team's lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Michigan State had runners in scoring position on multiple occasions, but good pitching by South Carolina got them out of those jams. The Spartans had two runners on in the first before the Gamecock left fielder tracked down a ball in foul territory. Ladd reached third base in the second inning, but a line drive ripped at the shortstop by freshman Kayleigh Roper was hauled in.
Miller stifled a few Gamecock scoring chances herself, stranding a runner on third in the first inning by striking out three consecutive batters.
MSU scored in the fourth inning after a lead-off walk by Wincher was followed up by a double from Meech. Barroso struck a ball to left allowing Wincher to score from third.
South Carolina rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 4-1 advantage lead over the Spartans. Jordan Fabian led the inning off with a double, her second extra base hit of the contest. Emma Sellers walked to put two on, before a Spartan error allowed all runners to remain safe on a Katie Prebble fielder's choice. Two runners came around to score following the error. A pair of additional runners came around to score in the sixth as South Carolina completed the comeback effort.
Up Next: Michigan State heads to Greensboro, North Carolina for the UNCG Spartan Classic on Thursday, March 10 through Sunday, March 13. The Spartans will face UNCG and Delaware State twice at the classic while playing Elon once.
