GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Michigan State softball team split two games against a powerful UNCG team on Thursday, March 10, winning 7-2 in the second game of the series after dropping game one by a score of 6-2.
With a split Michigan State's record moves to 12-10 on the season. The Spartans will play three more games over spring break before heading back to East Lansing.
UNCG got out to an early 4-0 lead in game one and never looked back. A first inning grand slam by Grace Loftin put UNCG in a comfortable position in the first inning.
Michigan State threatened with runners on throughout the game before breaking through in the fifth inning. Sophomore Alexis Barroso put the first run on the board for the Spartans following her first home run of the season. Barroso was 2-for-3 at the plate including a single in the seventh frame. Michigan State scored its second run of the inning on a double through the left side by senior Courtney Callahan. Callahan's hard struck double scored freshman Kayleigh Roper from first.
UNCG added a pair of insurance runs on a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead over Michigan State. Trying to rally in the seventh, Michigan State put two runners on before the comeback effort was stifled.
Junior Sarah Ladd took the circle for Michigan State in game one, allowing seven hits and six earned runs over 5.2 innings pitched. Freshman Faith Guidry came on in relief to record the final out of the sixth inning. UNCG got a strong start from Morgan Scott, who allowed seven hits and struck out five in a complete game effort.
MSU used a six-run third inning to control game two against UNCG.
A would-be home run for Roper was robbed at the wall to lead-off the inning, but senior Jessica Mabrey picked the team up by homering in the very next at-bat. Mabrey was 3-for-4 at the plate in game two as one of two Spartans to record three hits. Callahan and fifth year Caitie Ladd each singled before a double steal allowed Callahan to score while Ladd took second base. Ladd is currently riding a five-game hitting streak in which she is hitting .444 (8-for-18).
A walk by senior Mackenzie Meech put two on for Barroso who promptly singled through the left side to score Ladd. Barroso was 3-for-3 in game two, raising her batting average to a team-high .352. Coming on as a pinch hitter, sophomore Zaquai Dumas sent the dugout into a frenzy when she blasted a towering three-run home run down the left field line to cap off the inning.
Meech and Barroso teamed up again in the fifth inning following a Meech double. Barroso's single scored Meech from first as MSU extended its advantage to 7-0.
UNCG scored one run in each of the final two innings to bring the final score to 7-2. A throwing error in the sixth allowed a runner to score from first and a ground out scored a runner from third in the seventh.
Sophomore Ashley Miller was strong in the circle in game two, improving to 6-5 on the season. Miller is 4-0 when getting six or more runs of support from the offense. UNCG entered the game averaging 5.73 runs per game as Miller held them to a pair. Miller struck out nine batters, allowing nine hits and one earned run. The Spartans tagged UNCG starter Reese Byrd for six earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched on six hits and a walk.
