Brackets released, as MSU wrestlers find out tentative first-round opponents
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The five Michigan State wrestlers bound for the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships next week in Detroit found out their national seeds, as the NCAA announced the brackets for each weight class on its Selection Show Wednesday evening.
Â
MSU's five representatives, three of which are Michigan natives, will now prepare for the national championships on March 17-19 at Little Caesars Arena.
Â
The highest-seeded Spartan is former NCAA All-American and redshirt senior Rayvon Foley at 133 pounds, who earned the No. 8 seed in the weight class and is slated to face No. 25 Brian Courtney of Virginia in the first round. A four-time national qualifier, Foley went 28-4 this season and placed sixth at the Big Ten Championships
Â
Fellow redshirt senior Cameron Caffey will look to improve upon his sixth-place finish at the B1G Championship in the 197-pound class after notching the No. 9 seed, as the four-time NCAA qualifier holds a 27-7 record on the campaign. He is set to face Utah Valley's No. 24 Evan Bockman in his first bout next Thursday.
Â
At 157 pounds, sophomore Chase Saldate is slated as the 21-seed in his second trip to the NCAA Championships, with the Spartan sitting at 26-8 this season after finished in eighth place at the B1G tournament. Saldate is set to wrestle No. 12 Jacob Wright of Wyoming in the first round.
Â
After medically forfeiting his last bout at the Big Ten Championships to place 10th, redshirt junior Layne Malczewski draws the No. 22 seed in the 184-pound bracket. A three-time NCAA qualifier and owner of a 23-10 record this year, Malczewski is slated to battle No. 11 Jonathan Loew of Cornell in the opening session.
Â
Sophomore Caleb Fish will be the No. 31 seed in his first-ever NCAA Championships appearance, as an eighth-place finish at the B1G Championships and a 22-12 mark overall earned the Spartans an at-large bid to Detroit. Fish draws the second-seeded Keegan O'Toole of Missouri in the first round of action.
Â
Michigan State is coming off a 12th-place team finish at the Big Ten Championships after going 10-4 in the dual-meet season.
