EAST LANSING, Mich. – Pitching was the name of the game on Friday night as the Michigan State softball team fell to Ohio State by a final score of 3-0 at Secchia Stadium.
Junior Sarah Ladd got the start in the circle for the Spartans striking out seven in six innings of work. Ladd allowed five hits and three earned runs. Freshman Faith Guidry came on in relief of Ladd in the seventh inning, pitching a clean frame to get out of a tough spot.
Buckeye starter Lexie Handley tossed a complete game shutout, striking out six and allowing three hits to the Spartans.
Senior Courtney Callahan reached base twice for the Spartans on Friday with a walk and a single. Sophomores Alexis Barroso and Zaquai Dumas also had base knocks for Michigan State.
Ohio State was quick to take a 1-0 lead as the second batter of the afternoon, Jaycee Ruberti, hit a home run to right center to put the Buckeyes on top.
Michigan State looked to have momentum on its side in the third inning following a lead-off double from sophomore Zaquai Dumas. A sacrifice bunt from freshman Macy Lee moved Dumas over to third as the Spartans looked to capitalize. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Handley was able to get out of the jam.
The Spartans put another runner in scoring position in the fourth following a lead-off single by senior Courtney Callahan. Callahan stole second to put herself in position to score on a base hit. Once again however, Handley did her job and thwarted the Spartans' efforts.
Ohio State maintained a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth inning, when a 2-run home run from McKenzie Bump provided the Buckeyes with some insurance late in the game.
UP NEXT: Game two against Buckeyes has been moved up one hour from the previously scheduled game time. First pitch will now happen at 1:00 p.m. from Secchia Stadium.
