
Men's Tennis Celebrates Senior Day in Match Against Purdue

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis lost a tough match to Purdue on Sunday, April 10, falling by a 5-2 margin to the visiting Boilermakers.
The Spartans move to 14-10 on the season with a 1-5 mark in conference play, while the Boilermakers are now an even 9-9 and 2-2 in Big Ten matches.
Today's match also served as a Senior Day celebration for MSU's trio of graduates, Carson Gates, Josh Mukherjee and Jack Winkler.
Purdue started out the match winning the doubles point over Michigan State, winning two of three matches with plenty of fight coming from the Spartans.
Facing a deficit through the majority of their match, the duo of Reed Crocker and Nick Williams at No. 3 fought hard to tie their opponents from Purdue at 5-5. The Spartans won the next to points to earn a 7-5 victory.
At No. 1 doubles, Winkler and Graydon Lair went up 3-1 over Purdue's Piotr Galus and Michal Wozniak. The pair were overcome late by Galus and Wozniak and found themselves down 4-5, but also came back to tie the match at fives, and again 6-6 to send the battle into extra points. In the superset tiebreaker, Purdue won 7-5 to take the second match.
Anthony Pero and Josh Mukherjee fell 6-3 to Gabriele Brantacelli and Athell Bennett at the No. 2 court., securing the doubles point for Purdue.
The match was tied 1-1 after Max Sheldon earned MSU's first point. At No. 2 singles, Sheldon won his first set 6-3 and won the match when Gabriele Brantacelli medically retired. Both teams traded points as Carson Gates won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 over Piotr Galus of the Boilermakers, while Anthony Pero dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Purdue's Michal Wozniak at No. 6.
The remaining three matches were all battles for the second-set victory with the Spartans trying to force a third-set decision. Winkler fought through a grind of a second set with Purdue's Athlell Bennet, tying the second set 5-5 after a 6-3 loss in the first. Bennet won in a tiebreaker
Down 6-3 after his first set at No. 3, Luke Baylis was also tied 5-5 in the second set with Sebastain Welch at No. 3. Baylis's match ended in a 7-5 loss to Welch. The match ended at the No. 4 court. Graydon Lair fell 7-6, 7-6 in a pair of tiebreaker sets to Rohan Sachdev.
The Spartans are on the road next weekend for games against Penn State on Friday, April 15 and Ohio State on Sunday, April 17.
