
Men's Tennis Battles Penn State, Ohio State on the Road this Weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis is on the road this weekend for a pair of matches against Big Ten foes Penn State and Ohio State. The Spartans start the trip out with a match against Penn State on Friday, April 15 at 4 p.m. and wrap with a match on Sunday, April 17 with the Buckeyes at noon.Â
The Spartans are 14-10 on the season with a 1-5 mark against Big Ten conference opponents. MSU will face a tough road test this weekend with Ohio State being ranked No. 2 in the country with a 20-2 record. Three of OSU's singles players are ranked in the top 25, while the doubles duo of Robert Cash and Matej Vocel are the top-ranked pair in Division I doubles action.Â
Penn State is 11-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play this season.Â
"This will be a great road trip for the Spartans and a good follow up to last weekend's success on Senior Day weekend," head coach Gene Orlando commented. "We look to continue to played inspired tennis and finish the season strong!"
LAST TIME OUT
The Spartans split a pair of matches last weekend, including a 4-3 win over Indiana in MSU's first conference win of the season.
Michigan State's match against the Hoosiers came down to the wire, with MSU earning the tiebreak point after a victory at No. 1 singles by senior Jack Winkler. The Spartans came back from a 1-0 deficit after Indiana won the doubles point, earning victories on four of six singles courts to come away with the win.Â
Graydon Lair was the first off the courts with a singles victory for MSU, winning 6-2, 6-2 over his opponent. Carson Gates won his first set with a 6-0 blanking of his Hoosier opponent. His match went into a third-set tiebreaker after Ilya Tirapolsky came away with a 6-0 win of his own in the second set. The tiebreaker ended in a 6-4 victory to earn MSU another point.Â
At the No. 3 court, Luke Baylis fought his way through to a 7-6, 6-2 win to tie the match at 3-3. Winkler won the first set of his match at No. 1, 6-4, and after facing a 4-4 tie in his second set, fell behind two points to give Carson Haskins the second set win, 6-4. In the tiebreaker decision, Winkler fought his way out of a 3-3 tie with Haskins to win the match.
On Sunday, the Green & White celebrated Senior Day during a match against Purdue. Michigan State fell 5-2 to the Boilermakers, picking up points at No. 2 and 5 singles. Freshman Max Sheldon at the No. 2 court won his first set 6-3, and got the match victory when Gabriele Brantacelli medically retired. Senior Carson Gates won his match at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 over Piotr Galus of the Boilermakers.Â
The team honored Gates, Winker and Josh Mukherjee, the team's three graduating seniors.Â
