EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State gymnastics freshman Skyla Schulte heads to Fort Worth, Texas this week as an individual competitor in the 2022 NCAA Gymnastics Championships. Schulte qualifies as a competitor on beam following her top finish in NCAA Regionals on March 31 on the apparatus.
The Championships begin on Thursday, April 14 with the semifinal round and conclude on Saturday, April 16 with the finals at 1 p.m. ET. The semifinals are split into two sessions and kick off with Session I at 1 p.m. ET. Thursday's sessions will air on ESPN2, with the finals being broadcast on ABC. Video streaming will also be available through the Watch ESPN app.
Schulte, a native of Bolingbrook, Illinois, is MSU's first NCAA Nationals qualifier since Lisa Burt competed all-around in 2016's NCAA Championships.
The Spartans capped off a record-breaking 2022 season with an impressive run in the postseason, making their first appearance at NCAA Regionals as a team since 2016. In the West Regional in Seattle, Washington, the Green & White advance to the Regional Finals after finishing ahead of BYU and host Washington in the second round of Regionals on March 31.
Michigan State's run in the postseason ended at the Regional Finals. Despite putting up their highest team score in program history with a 197.650, the Spartans finished third overall behind Alabama with a 198.175 and Utah with a 198.200. Schulte's score on beam from the second round held up as the top score of the night to earn her a spot in the Championships as an individual competitor.
Schulte will rotate with Alabama, a familiar face as one of MSU's competitors in the second round of Regionals and the Regional Finals. The Crimson Tide advanced to the Championships as one of 12 team qualifiers and will represent the SEC along with Auburn, Florida and Missouri. Schulte and Alabama will compete in Thursday's morning semifinal at 1 p.m. ET.
Session I of the semifinals features Alabama, Oklahoma, Utah and Minnesota, while the second session beginning at 6 p.m. will be between Florida, Missouri, Auburn and Michigan. The Golden Gophers and Wolverines are the two Big Ten teams to qualify for Nationals as a group. A total of 20 individual competitors will take the stage this week, four all-arounders and four individuals per event.
Also competing on beam is Sirena Linton from Arizona, Abbie Thompson of Denver and Adeline Kenlin of Big Ten foe Iowa. Kennedy Hambrick (Arkansas), Jade Carey (Oregon State), Raena Worley (Kentucky) and Norah Flatley (UCLA) represent the individual all-arounders.
Schulte is the 12th Spartan individual to advance to the NCAA Championships. Schulte had a breakthrough rookie season with the Green & White, being named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and First Team All-B1G at the conclusion of the regular season. She holds the MSU all-around record, a score of 39.675 achieved on March 5 against Western Michigan and boasts career-highs of 9.950 on beam, bars, and floor with a 9.925 on vault.
For the season, Schulte earned a total of 12 individual titles and five all-around crowns. She earned her first-career title in MSU's season-opening tri-meet at UC Davis when she posted a 9.875 on vault. The first-year Spartan holds the third, fourth, sixth and seventh-highest all-around scores in MSU history in addition to being the all-around record holder. She is one of just five Spartans to have scored a 9.950 or higher on an event this season.
