MSU’s late rally comes up short in series finale.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball was defeated by Michigan at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field in Sunday's series finale of the three-game Big Ten Conference weekend series.
The Spartans fell by a final score of 6-3, with another late rally coming up short.
MSU and UM opened the weekend Friday night in the Capital Clash, played at Jackson Field, home of the Lansing Lugnuts, before the Spartans and Wolverines played Saturday and Sunday's game on campus at MSU's McLane Stadium at Kobs Field. This season combined with last year's three-games in East Lansing marked the first time the Spartans have hosted six-straight games in the series since 1888-1891, bettering a stretch of five in a row from 1995-96, with two meetings in East Lansing sandwiching a Lansing match-up in the middle.
Michigan State rapped out 10 hits Sunday, the most of the weekend, with three Spartan sophomores knocking two hits apiece. Infielder Mitch Jebb went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while infielder Dillon Kark was 2-for-4 with one run, and outfielder Jack Frank was 2-for-5. Another sophomore infielder, Trent Farquhar was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior outfielder Zaid Walker was 1-for-3 with a walk. Junior outfielder Peter Ahn and sophomore infielder Brock Vradenburg were both 1-for-4, with Ahn scoring a run. Jebb and Farquhar had a double apiece, also each drawing a walk. Redshirt-freshman Bryan Broecker had an RBI and was hit by a pitch.
Junior starting pitcher Conner Tomasic was solid throughout the day, posting three strikeouts while scattering five hits, yielding six runs, three earned, with three walks. Graduate senior reliever Kyle Bischoff threw the final 2.0 innings, logging two punchouts and a walk, without a hit or run.
Unlike the first two games of the series, MSU kept UM in check in the early innings, as the Wolverines had jumped out to big leads Friday and Saturday.
Sunday's series finale was a scoreless draw through three frames, before the Wolverines score three runs in both the fourth and fifth frames for a 6-0 lead.
Like the previous two games of the weekend, the Spartan defense had some highlights, including three double plays on Sunday, as MSU padded to its B1G lead in DPs, now with 28 on the season.
MSU got on the board in the home half of the sixth, as Farquhar walked to start the rally. Frank then followed with a single and Vradenburg then laced a Texas Leaguer single down the left field to load the bases full of Spartans. Broecker was up next and he knocked a deep flyout to center field for the sacrifice fly to plate Farquhar, making the score 6-1.
In the seventh, Ahn hit a one-out single through the right side the spark the Spartan rally, with Kark following with a single to left. Jebb was up next and he cracked a double to right center to score Ahn, then Farquhar smacked a deep shot off the top of the wall in right for the second half of back-to-back doubles, driving in Kark, pulling MSU within 6-3. Two batters later Vradenburg walked to once again load the bases full of Spartans, but a strikeout ended the rally.
Bischoff came on in the eighth, ending that frame in unconventional 1-2-3 order with an inning-ending 3-6-3 double play, MSU's third two-outs, one-play of the day.
After the Spartans went down in order in the bottom of the eighth, Bischoff retired the Wolverines in three-up, three-down fashion, sandwiching two groundouts around a strikeout.
MSU did not go quietly into the sunny Easter Sunday afternoon, as Kark led off with a single to left, prompting UM's second pitching change of the inning after one batter. After a flyout and strikeout, Frank singled to left, but the rally ended without a run on a flyout to conclude the contest, stranding two runners as Michigan State finished the game leaving 10 left on base.
The Spartans continue their homestand and stretch against in-state opposition by hosting Oakland on Tuesday, April 19 and Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, April 20 at McLane Field at Kobs Field. First pitch for both contests is set for 6:35 p.m.
The week schedule is subject to change based on weather.
