Led by Raines, Michigan State Leads the B1G Championship After Opening Round

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's women's golf team fired a 2-under par 282 and holds a three-shot lead after the first round of the Big Ten Championship, being played at Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Spartans were the only team to finish below par on Friday.
MSU, ranked No. 34 in the country in the latest Golfstat rankings, leads the 14-team field, with Purdue and Michigan tied for second place at 1-over par 285 and Illinois and Maryland tied for fourth place with scores of 4-over par 288.
Sophomore Leila Raines fired a 3-under par 68 and is tied atop the leaderboard with Nebraska's Michaela Vavrova. Raines played the front nine in 3-under par 33, including four birdies. She finished the first round with five birdies and 11 pars, including the last five holes.
In addition to Raines, the Spartans have three other players among the top-20 individually.
Freshman Katie Lu and sophomore Valentina Rossi are among a group of seven golfers tied for ninth place at even-par 71. Lu had three birdies on the front nine and finished her round with four overall and 10 pars. Rossi finished the back nine with a pair of birdies, had three overall and 12 pars.
Senior Valery Plata is tied for 16th place at 1-over par 72. Plata's round included two birdies and 14 pars, including the final five holes.
Freshman Brooke Biermann and senior Haylin Harris are tied for 26th place with scores of 2-over par 73. Biermann's round included 14 pars, with eight on the back nine.
The Spartans will tee off on Saturday morning between 10:24 a.m. and 11:11 a.m., playing alongside Michigan and Purdue.
