
Women’s Golf in Fifth Place After First Round of NCAA Stillwater Regional

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's women's golf team shot a 15-over par 303 in the first round of play and is in fifth place among 12 teams after the first round of play at the NCAA Stillwater Regional, being played at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Oklahoma.
The Stillwater Regional, being played at the par-72, 6,303-yard course, continues with 18 holes on Tuesday and a final round on Wednesday.
The top four teams and top two individuals (not on an advancing team) qualify for the championships, which will be held for the second-straight year at Grayhawk Golf Club (Raptor Course) in Scottsdale, Ariz., from May 20-25.
First Round Results
The Spartans played alongside Auburn and Clemson in Monday's first round with temperatures in the low 90s and winds around 20 miles per hour.
Baylor, seeded third in the regional, took the first round lead with a 4-over par 292, with Clemson in second, one shot back at 5-over par 293, while top seeded Oklahoma State and third-seeded Arizona State are tied for third place at 8-over par 296. The Spartans sit seven shots back.
Sophomores Leila Raines and Valentina Rossi and senior Valery Plata are each tied for 15th place with scores of 3-over par 75 to lead the Spartans.
Starting on the back nine, Raines parred her first seven holes before a double bogey on 17 and closed out 18 with a par. She finished with a pair of birdies on the front nine to finish at 3-over par.
Rossi recorded 13 pars and had two bridies – one on the par-5, 445-yard 18th hole and the other on the par-4, 377-yard second hole – but posted a triple bogey on the par-4, 335-yard fourth hole for her 75.
Plata had bogies on five of the first eight holes, but closed out her opening half with a birdie on the 18th hole and played the front nine in 1-under par, with birdies on the second hole and the par-4, 418-yard eighth hole.
Freshman Brooke Biermann is tied for 31st place at 6-over par 78. Her round included two birdies and 10 pars.
Freshman Katie Lu shot a 16-over par 88 and is in 62nd place.
The Spartans will tee off on Tuesday playing alongside Arizona State and Furman.
