
NCAA Stillwater Regional Begins on Monday for Spartans

East Lansing, Mich. – The Michigan State women's golf team will begin play in the 2022 NCAA Stillwater Regional on Monday. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played from Monday, May 9 to Wednesday, May 11 at the par-72, 6,303-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The Spartans were an at-large selection and are the No. 5 seed among 12 teams. The 12 teams competing in the Stillwater Regional include, in order of seed, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Baylor, Auburn, Michigan State, Clemson, Campbell, Furman, N.C. State, California and Illinois State.
The top four teams and top two individuals (not on an advancing team) qualifying for the championships, which will be held for the second-straight year at Grayhawk Golf Club (Raptor Course) in Scottsdale, Ariz., from May 20-25.

Michigan State is making its sixth-straight NCAA Regionals appearance and 22nd since 1999. The Spartans are looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the second-straight time, as the team tied for fourth the Louisville Regional in 2021 and finished in 16th place at the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Arizona.

While head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll is making her 22nd appearance in NCAA Regionals, just two of the five players in the Spartan lineup have seen Regional action … Senior Valery Plata will be playing in her second regional, along with sophomores Leila Raines and Valentina Rossi … Plata played in her first NCAA Regional in 2021 in Louisville, tying for 12th place with a score of 1-over par 217 … Then-freshmen Raines and Rossi had their first taste of regional experience in 2021 … Raines tied for 51st-place at 10-over par 226 (77-72-77), while Rossi was 16-over par 232 (76-77-79).
The Spartans' three lowest 54-hole team scores at an NCAA Regional have come since 2017, as their 872 in Athens in 2017 is the lowest. MSU shot a 5-over par 878 in 2021 in Louisville for the second-lowest mark, while the 882 in 2019 in Austin is the third-lowest.

Senior Valery Plata was selected to the All-Big Ten First Team on April 27, the third-straight year she has earned All-Big Ten First Team honors … Plata, who helped guide Michigan State to a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships, leads the Spartans with a 72.48 stroke average and has been the team's top finisher four times this year … She has one top-five finish, tying for second place at the Lady Buckeye Invitational on April 16, three top-10 finishes and five events where she finished among the top-20 … Plata is a three-time First Team All-Big Ten selection and was the 2020 Big Ten Player of the Year.
National, International Success for Plata
It has been a busy year for senior Valery Plata. She played in the 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA), held from March 30 to April 2, at the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. … While she missed the cut at the ANWA, she was able to spend the weekend at historic Augusta National Golf Club, where the finals were held … In the fall, Plata balanced playing on the college circuit and in international events.
She led the Spartans in stroke average (73.00) in 12 rounds, while winning both the Women's Amateur Latin American (WALA) Championship in Argentina in November and then becoming the first-ever women's winner of the Patriot All-American Invitational in Arizona in December … Ranked No. 42 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and first in the South American amateur ranks, Plata's win in the WALA automatically qualified her for two of the five Majors in 2022, the AIG Women's Open and the Evian Championship … Plata has played in the last two U.S. Women's Amateurs and was a semifinalist in 2020.

Valery Plata's 73.12 career average is currently third best in program history, behind only Ally Geer (72.87) and Sarah Burnham (72.92) … Plata leads MSU in scoring average this year at 72.48, which is the sixth-lowest in program history .. She has two of the top-six averages in MSU history ... Brooke Biermann's 5-under-par 211 at the ICON Invitational was the lowest 54-hole total by any Spartan this season and is among the top-20 for lowest at MSU.
Model of Consistency
The Michigan State women's golf program has appeared in 22 of the past 23 NCAA Regionals (1999-2014; 2016-22) and has earned a berth in the NCAA Championships 12 times since 2000 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2021).
In addition, since the inception of the conference championships in 1974, only Ohio State (18) has won more league titles than the Spartans (14). MSU won five consecutive Big Ten titles from 1974-78, and has won conference crowns in 1982, 2001, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2021.

In Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll's 25 years guiding the program, she has led MSU to eight Big Ten titles (2001, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2021), 12 trips to the NCAA Championships (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2021), and 22 appearances in the NCAA Regionals (1999-2014, 2016-22).
MSU has won 43 tournaments during Slobodnik-Stoll's tenure, and her players have earned All-Big Ten honors 57 times, including 36 first-team selections. She has been voted Big Ten Coach of the Year on five occasions (2001, 2007, 2012, 2017, 2018).
Slobodnik-Stoll was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in June 2017 and the Women's Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December 2017.
