Omania Receives Top Seed at 67kg in Greco-Roman Senior Division
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Five Michigan State wrestlers are set to compete at the 2022 USMC U.S. Open this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, starting with the Senior and UWW Junior Freestyle divisions on Friday, April 29 and the Senior Greco-Roman division getting underway on Saturday, April 30.
Â
Spartan grapplers Cameron Caffey, Ryan Vasbinder, Peyton Omania, Caleb Fish and Luke Daly will all be competing in the U.S. Open after completing their collegiate campaigns last month.
Â
Omania will look to build off his qualification to the 2021 U.S. Greco-Roman Senior World Team last fall, as the rising-redshirt junior has earned the No. 1 seed at 67kg for the senior-level Greco-Roman division. The 2021 NCAA qualifier at 149 pounds defeated two former Olympians to claim the 67kg title at the 2021 U.S. Senior World Team Trials.
Â
A four-time NCAA qualifier, Caffey will open senior freestyle competition as the No. 2 seed in the 92kg weight class. Moving over to freestyle for the U.S. Open this spring, the fifth-year Spartan was the 2019 UWW Junior Nationals champion at 87kg in Greco-Roman and qualified for the 2019 Greco-Roman Junior World Championships. The MSU 197-pounder was a 2020 NWCA All-American at 184 pounds.
Â
Vasbinder will also compete in the senior freestyle division, wrestling at the 125kg weight class. The 2021 NCAA Division II champion at 197 pounds with McKendree, Vasbinder redshirted this past season at MSU to bump up to heavyweight for the 2022-23 campaign.
Â
Qualifying for the 2022 NCAA Championships in his first season as a Spartan starter at 165 pounds, Fish is set to compete in the U20 freestyle division in the 74kg class. After redshirting his true freshman season and tally a 15-10 record in open tournaments, the 174-pound Daly will compete at the U20 freestyle nationals alongside Fish, wrestling at 79kg.
Â
The U.S. Open serves as a qualifying event for the 2022 Senior World Team Trials Challenge and the U20 World Team Trials.
Â
As a reminder, scoring is different in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling compared to the folkstyle wrestling that is seen at the collegiate level.
Â
Taking place at the South Point Hotel & Casino, the 2022 U.S. Open will be streamed live on flowrestling.org with brackets and results available at arena.flowrestling.org.
