Softball’s Late Rally Falls Short in Loss to Ohio State

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The third low-scoring affair of the weekend wasn't without excitement on Sunday as the Michigan State softball team was defeated by Ohio State, 2-1, at Secchia Stadium. Michigan State tried to rally late, scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth and putting two runners on base in the seventh.
Sophomore Ashley Miller had another strong outing in the circle for the Spartans throwing her 15th complete game of the season. Miller allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out a pair. Ohio State's Lexie Handley matched Miller's performance by allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out nine MSU batters.
Talented pitching kept the game scoreless through the first five inning of play until both teams scored in the sixth.
A sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third for the Buckeyes in the top of the sixth, setting up a play that caused some confusion on the field. A single to short from McKenzie Bump hit an Ohio State baserunner, causing the play to be blown dead, but not before the runner on third came home. In many cases the baserunner would be called out in that scenario, but since the runner was behind MSU shortstop Kayleigh Roper, the play was blown dead, and the runner was safe at third. Ohio State tacked on a second run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
Michigan State put runners into scoring position in the bottom half of the sixth following a lead-off walk from senior Kendall Kates and a hit by pitch for sophomore Marissa Trivelpiece. Senior Jessica Mabrey's fly out moved the runners into scoring position and set up a sacrifice fly for senior Courtney Callahan.
Sophomore Alexis Barroso led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center as the Spartans looked to complete the come from behind victory. Barroso's double was MSU's first hit of the afternoon. Sophomore Zaquai Dumas would later walk in the inning, but the Spartans were unable to bring a runner around to score.
UP NEXT: Michigan State will stay at home for a 5:00 p.m. midweek non-conference matchup against Oakland on Tuesday, April 5 before heading to Ann Arbor for a 6:00 p.m. game against the Michigan Wolverines on Wednesday, April 6. Wednesday's game in Ann Arbor will be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network.
