Softball Plays Role of Spoiler on Saturday

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State softball played the role of spoiler on Saturday as the Spartans broke up a late perfect game bid in an 8-0 loss to Maryland. A sixth inning single from senior Kendall Kates thwarted the Terrapin attempt at perfection.
With five strikeouts pitching in relief, sophomore Ashley Miller moved into second all-time at Michigan State for single-season strikeouts. Miller has struck out 237 batters in just her second season as a Spartan and sits 28 strikeouts away from topping the record book.
Freshman Faith Guidry got the start for the Spartans before Miller entered the game in the third inning. Fellow freshman Ashley Martin tossed the final two frames in her sixth appearance of the season.
Rutgers starter Courtney Wyche struck out 10 MSU batters, allowing one hit in a complete game shutout. Jaeda McFarland led the Scarlet Knights at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance that included three RBIs.
UP NEXT: Michigan State will look to take game three of the series against Maryland on Sunday, May 1. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
