EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State softball team couldn't avoid the big inning on Saturday as the Spartans were defeated by Nebraska in the series opener, 6-0, at Secchia Stadium. Nebraska scored five of its six runs in the second frame as Michigan State held the Huskers scoreless in five of seven innings.
Sophomore Ashley Miller threw her 16th complete game of the season in the circle for Michigan State, allowing six earned runs on seven hits while striking out six. Miller's six strikeouts gives her 178 on the season, moving her into sole possession of sixth-place all-time in program history for single-single strikeouts. Miller passed Becky Gray (2002, 174) and Lauren Kramer (2010, 177) on Saturday. Stacey Smith is next in the pecking order with 189 strikeouts to her name in the 1997 season.
Nebraska's Olivia Ferrell tossed a complete game shutout for the Big Red, allowing four hits and five walks while striking out six. The Spartans had a number of chances to do damage on Saturday with four lead-off walks but left eight runners on base.
The Huskers took advantage of a five-run second inning to put game one out of reach after a trio of singles led the game's first run. A two-out intentional walk to one of the most dangerous hitters in the country, Billie Andrews, set up a grand slam from Cam Ybarra as Nebraska took a 5-0 lead.
A lead-off walk from sophomore Zaquai Dumas and a single from senior Kendall Kates looked to get the Spartans rolling in the bottom of the third, but MSU left two on in the inning.
Nebraska increased its advantage to 6-0 in the fifth after a lead-off double was followed by a triple to right field.
A walk from sophomore Alexis Barroso and a two-out single to right by fifth-year Caitie Ladd put runners on the corners for Michigan State in the sixth inning. Senior Jessica Mabrey and freshman Kayleigh Roper also had hits for the Spartans on Saturday. Mabrey, Barroso, Dumas, senior Mackenzie Meech and freshman Macy Lee drew walks. Junior Kennedy Wyllie reached on a hit by pitch in the seventh inning.
UP NEXT: Michigan State and Nebraska will finish up the three-game series on Sunday, April 10 with a doubleheader and Secchia Stadium. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m. Both games can be viewed live on BTN+ or fans can listen in on the Spartan Radio Network where Dalton Shetler will be calling the action from the booth.
