Michigan State’s Season Ends in Big Ten Tournament

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State softball team saw its season come to a close in the first round of the 2022 Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday, falling to Maryland by a score of 7-1.
Michigan State concludes the season with an overall record of 24-28.
Sophomore Ashley Miller got the start for MSU, striking out three batters in 5.1 innings of work. Miller finishes her campaign with 244 strikeouts, the second most single-season strikeouts in program history. The Leo, Indiana native finishes 20 punch outs behind the all-time leader, Jessica Beach (264, 2004).
Pitching in relief, junior Sarah Ladd earned a pair of outs to close the season with a 2.98 ERA.
Senior Courtney Callahan and Mackenzie Meech each singled in their final games wearing the green & white. Fifth-year Caitie Ladd drove in the final RBI of her career to put Michigan State on the board late. Ladd finishes her career with 88 RBIs for the Spartans, playing in 209 total games with 205 starts in the middle infield.
Maryland opened the scoring by putting two runs on the board in the fourth inning, scoring first on a fielder's choice before another came across to score on a stolen base. The Terrapins extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth frame after an RBI single from Taylor Okada scored Megan Mikami from third.
A four-run sixth inning pushed Maryland's advantage to 7-0 as the game headed to the final stanza.
Junior Camryn Wincher led off the seventh inning with a single to short before advancing to second on a throwing error. A ground out from sophomore Alexis Barroso moved Wincher to third where she would later be scored by Ladd. Senior Kendall Kates drew a two-out walk and Meech singled in the final at-bat of her career.
The seventh inning was the lone blemish on Maryland pitcher Courtney Wyche's day as she held the Spartans to one run on three hits. Jaeda McFarland and Okada each had a pair of hits for the Terps.
