Both Spartans Continue Quest to Qualify for 2022 Senior World Team
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestlers Cameron Caffey and Peyton Omania will both attempt to get one step closer to making the 2022 U.S. Senior World Team this weekend, as the two Spartans are slated to compete in the U.S. World Team Trials Challenge Tournament on May 21-22 at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
Caffey, the 2022 U.S. Open champion in the 92kg senior freestyle division, and Omania, the 2021 U.S. World Team member at the 67kg Greco-Roman weight class, are both set to open action on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET (10 a.m. CT). The matches will be streamed on FloWrestling.org.
A four-time NCAA qualifier and a member of the 2019 U.S. Greco-Roman Junior World Team, Caffey enters the U.S. World Team Trials as the No. 1 seed after claiming the U.S. Open title. The redshirt senior made his way to the senior freestyle 92kg finals in Las Vegas two weeks ago with victories over Michigan's Bobby Striggow, Campbell's Levi Hopkins and Virginia's Michael Battista on the opening day. He then came back from a 5-0 deficit in the final match against top-seeded Isaac Trumble of N.C. State, posting an 11-7 decision over his fellow 2022 NCAA qualifier and automatically earning the No. 1 seed in this week's field.
After defeating a pair of former Olympians to win the U.S. Senior World Team Trials last fall and representing his country in Oslo, Norway at the UWW World Championships, Omania returned to the Greco-Roman stage as the top seed at the U.S. Open. He advanced to the senior 67kg semifinals before losing in an 8-7 decision to Princeton's Lenny Merkin, rebounding with a 10-0 decision in the consolation semis and then losing the third-place match to the 2021 U23 U.S. Champion Alston Nutter. Omania enters this weekend as the No. 4 seed in Coralville.
For Caffey, his path to the U.S. Senior World Team will involve reaching the finals of the World Team Trials Challenge, winning a best-of-3 final series to advance to Final X Stillwater, where he would then face defending world bronze medalist J'den Cox in another best-of-3 series in Stillwater, Oklahoma on June 3.
Omania's path to rejoining the Senior World Team will require the redshirt sophomore to advance out of the semifinals at this weekend's World Team Trials Challenge. The finalists from this weekend would then wrestle a best-of-3 series at Final X New York on June 8.
The qualifying members of the U.S. Senior World Team will compete at the 2022 World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Serbia on Sept. 12-18.
