East Lansing, Mich. - Recent Michigan State gymnastics graduate Lea Mitchell was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday afternoon.Â
A total of 22 student-athletes from the Big Ten earned the recognition, with Mitchell representing the Spartans as the sole recipient. All selections are now eligible for Academic All-America status, with those selections made next month.
A native of Boynton Beach, Florida, Mitchell earns her first Academic All-District nod, but has been recognized for both her athletic and academic achievements several times throughout her five-year career as a Spartan. She is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten and WCGA Academic All-American selection, and was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar three times. In 2021, she received the illustrious Big Ten Conference Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award, the first MSU female student-athlete to receive this honor and only the second Spartan overall. She has also been recognized by MSU Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) several times, including the winning of the Provost's Award her freshman year.
Mitchell has been a mainstay in the Spartan lineup since the beginning, competing all-around for four seasons before moving to consistent spots on bars, beam and floor in 2022. She earned All-B1G Second Team honors in 2019 and was named to the First Team in 2020. This season, Mitchell earned season-high scores of 9.0 on bars and floor with a career-high 9.925 achieved on beam. Academically, she earned her fourth Academic All-Big Ten honor and was the recipient of the Scholar-Athlete award from MSU SASS for the second straight year
She graduated this spring with a graduate degree in journalism and ended the semester with a 4.0 GPA, her ninth consecutive semester with a perfect grade.
Mitchell and the Spartan gymnasts wrapped up the 2022 season ranked ninth in the nation, their highest national ranking in program history. The season was highlighted by smashing program records throughout competition, setting a new program-best team score of 197.650 in the NCAA Regional finals, as well as setting new all-time high team scores on vault, bars, beam and floor. Â
