Petruno Becomes Second Team All-American in the 1500m with Ninth-Place Finish
EUGENE, Ore. – A late kick to the front with 700 meters remaining was not enough for Morgan Beadlescomb in the men's 5000m finals on Friday night, as the Michigan State track and field team concluded its stay at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Â
Finishing as the runner-up to the National Champion Olin Hacker of Wisconsin, Beadlescomb earned his second NCAA silver medal in the last four months, while teammate John Petruno racked up All-American honors for the first time in his career, finishing ninth in the men's 1500m to become a Second Team All-American.
"I think Morgan did a phenomenal job," said Director of Track & Field Lisa Breznau. "He tried to win a national championship, and that's what we came here to do. I'm super proud of the way he raced, gutsy try. He's got a lot more ahead of him down the road professionally but he's always going to be a Spartan. It was also great to see John make the final in his first time at the NCAAs and place ninth, and as a staff we are super proud of what both men did tonight."
In the men's 5000m finals, Beadlescomb settled in for the first 4000 meters, as he worked himself into position to make his move on the second-to-last lap and jumped to the lead on the back stretch. Entering the final 400 meters in front with Hacker on his tail, Beadlescomb kept his Big Ten counterpart on his tail until the final turn, when Hacker got past the Spartan on the outside lane for the final 100 meters, as Beadlescomb was the runner-up with a 13:28.38 time in his final collegiate race.
Â
With his second-place finish, Beadlescomb earned First Team All-American honors for the fourth time in his track career and ninth overall All-American award between track and cross country. He is the first Spartan men's track & field athlete to be a four-time First Team All-American since Tim Ehrhardt (2015-18). He is also the only Spartan men's runner in program history to be a two-time First Team All-American in the outdoor 5000m. Additionally, he is the first MSU athlete to finish runner-up at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since Justine Kiprotich in 2019's 1500m finals and is the first Spartan to finish runner-up in any national event since his second-place finish in the mile at March's NCAA Indoor Championships.
Â
Petruno broke into the middle of the pack to start the men's 1500m finals, holding pace for much of the race before running a 54.02 over the final 400 meters. The Spartan crossed the finish line at 3:46.56 to place ninth, just 0.28 seconds shy of beating Wisconsin's Adam Spencer and reaching the podium.
Â
For Petruno, he becomes the first MSU men's runner to place top-10 in the men's 1500m at the national outdoor championships since Kiprotich in 2019.
"The team had, honestly, a great performance this week in Eugene, and I could'nt be more proud of the entire group," added Breznau. "We're just really pleased with the performances we had."
"With Jenna Magness and Morgan, and their races this weekend to cap off their college careers, I mean, we're gonna miss them. It was an emotional end for all of us down in that tent once they came out, with Morgan tonight and Jenna yesterday. They've just been just incredible leaders for us and incredible ambassadors of the university. We really just couldn't be more proud of the way they they behaved this weekend and how they've supported our program during their time here."
Â
With Friday's races, Michigan State ends the 2022 outdoor season with three First Team All-Americans (Beadlescomb, Jenna Magness and Sophia Franklin), four Second Team All-Americans (John Petruno, Trevor Stephenson, Heath Baldwin and Makayla Perez) and one Honorable Mention All-American (Ryan Talbot). The Spartan men finished tied for 39th in the team standings with eight points, while the women's team standings at the NCAA Championships will be determined following Saturday's finals.
