EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State field hockey (4-2, 0-1 B1G) travels to the East Coast for its first conference road matchups of the season this weekend, visiting a pair of top-10 nationally ranked opponents on Friday and Sunday.Â
The Spartans visit No. 6 Penn State (6-1, 1-0 B1G) on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m., before travelling to College Park, Md. on Sunday, Sept. 25 for a 1 p.m. game at No. 3 Maryland (7-1, 1-0 B1G). Â
LAST TIME OUTÂ
Michigan State enters the weekend after going 1-1 at home last weekend. The Spartans fell to No. 19 Rutgers, 2-3, in overtime on Friday, Sept. 16 before topping Bellarmine, 3-1, on Sunday, Sept. 18. Graduate student Isa van der Weij and junior Ashley Harlock led the Spartan scorers over the weekend, combining for nine points. van der Weij scored her first two goals of the season, scoring a goal in each game, while Harlock assisted on three of Michigan State's five goals over the weekend and added a goal of her own against Bellarmine. Senior Hannah Jarvie and junior Lulu Fulton each scored a goal for the Spartans. Graduate goalkeeper Monique Jardell has continued to play every minute in goal for Michigan State, posting a 0.771 save percentage. The Spartans currently rank ninth in the NCAA in scoring margin with an average of 1.71 goals. Â
HANSSEN AND RUTHERFORD NAMED TO NFHCA COLLEGIATE WATCH LISTÂ
Spartan midfielders Merel Hanssen and Ellie Rutherford were named to the inaugural National Field Hockey Coaches Association Collegiate Watch List on Sept. 15. The watch list, which consists of 254 collegiate student-athletes across all three divisions, is intended to represent field hockey student-athletes with the strongest potential for consideration to the NFHCA All-Region and All-American teams. Both Hanssen and Rutherford have started all six games for the Spartans this season, with Rutherford totaling seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) and Hanssen totaling four (1 goal, 2 assists). Hanssen earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors and was named to the NFHCA All-West Region team in 2021.Â
SCOUTING PENN STATEÂ
Penn State is coming off a two-win weekend, topping No. 7 Michigan in its Big Ten opener, 2-1, on Friday, Sept. 16, and beating Cornell, 3-0, on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Nittany Lions' lone loss of the season came at the hands of No. 9 Louisville on Aug. 28. Junior forward Sophia Gladieux leads the Nittany Lions in scoring with 19 points, recording eight goals and three assists. Penn State and Michigan State last played on Oct. 24, 2021, with the Nittany Lions capturing a 1-0 victory. Penn State leads the all-time series, 36-10.Â
SCOUTING MARYLANDÂ
Maryland posts a 7-1 record after falling in a midweek matchup at No. 7 Princeton on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The previously unbeaten Terrapins post wins over three top-25 opponents so far this season, defeating No. 14 Boston College, No. 18 Duke, and No. 12 Harvard. Sophomore forward Hope Rose leads all scorers for Maryland with 22 points, recording eight goals and six assists. The last matchup between the Spartans and Terrapins came on Oct. 22, 2021, with the Terrapins notching a 4-0 win. Maryland leads the all-time series, 14-0. Maryland hosts No. 8 Michigan on Friday, Sept. 23 before the Spartans arrive in College Park on Sunday. Â
