Field Hockey Topped by No. 3 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â Michigan State field hockey (4-4, 0-3 B1G) fell to No. 3 Maryland (9-1, 3-0 B1G), 7-2, Sunday afternoon at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.Â
Spartan goalkeeper Monique Jardell made a career-high 12 saves in the loss, while graduate midfielder Isa van der Weij scored a pair of goals to become Michigan State's leading scorer on the season.Â
Maryland quickly opened the scoring in the first quarter, as Riley Donnelly passed to Sophie Klautz to give the Terrapins a 1-0 lead two minutes into the game. Maryland quickly doubled its lead with a goal from Hope Rose in the fourth minute and took a 3-0 lead after a goal from Bibi Donraat in the ninth minute. Spartan forward Hannah Jarvie recorded a shot on goal in the first quarter, while van der Weij added another shot for Michigan State in the final minute of the quarter.Â
The Spartans and Terrapins played a scoreless second quarter, giving Maryland a 3-0 edge heading into halftime. Michigan State's defense held off eight Maryland shots, while Jardell made five saves in the quarter. Jarvie recorded her second shot on goal in the quarter.Â
Maryland added a pair of goals in the third quarter from Emma DeBerdine and Riley Donnelly to take a 5-0 lead. Jarvie added a third shot on goal in the quarter, while Spartan defender Georgia recorded her first shot of the game during the 34th minute.Â
The Terrapins added two more goals in the fourth quarter from Rose and Leah Crouse. The Spartans, however, cut into the Maryland lead in the final minutes of the game with two successful penalty corner shots from van der Weij. Senior defender Celina Riccardo and junior midfielder Ellie Wheatley added assists on both goals. The pair of goals were van der Weij's third and fourth of the season, all four goals coming from penalty corners. Â
Michigan State stays on the road for a pair of games in Ohio next weekend. The Spartans take on No. 23 Ohio State on Friday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m., before traveling to Ohio University on Sunday, Oct. 2 for a noon matchup.Â
