East Lansing, Mich. - Behind a hat trick from Jagger Joshua and a 35-save performance from Dylan St. Cyr, the Michigan State hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with No. 5 Penn State on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena. No. 17/16 MSU earned four of a possible six points on the weekend with a Friday OT win and Saturday shootout victory.
The two teams went to overtime for the second consecutive night, and the sellout crowd – MSU's fifth consecutive – was treated to a game of up-tempo hockey, thrilling goals, and great goaltending on each side. MSU went down 3-1 in the second period before battling back to tie it before the end of the period, traded goals with the visitors 11 seconds apart in the third, killed off an overtime penalty, and then saw all three skaters score in the shootout to secure the extra point in the Big Ten standings.
Joshua extended his team goal-scoring lead to 11, and potted his second hat trick of the season. He finished with four goals on the weekend to help the Spartans (13-11-2, 7-7-2 Big Ten) move back into second place in the Big Ten standings. Senior Miroslav Mucha had the other Spartan goal, while freshman Karsen Dorwart finished with two assists.
Danny Dzhaniyev had a goal and assist for Penn State (17-6-1, 7-6-1 Big Ten) while Liam Souliere had 32 saves.
Michigan State is idle next weekend and returns to action on January 27-28 at Minnesota.

PERIOD SUMMARIES
First Period: The Nittany Lions scored first for the second straight game, getting on the board with a goal by Kevin Wall at 6:41. There was a loose puck below the dots and the Spartans couldn't clear it, and wall redirected it past St. Cyr from the low slot. MSU got the first power play chance in the second half of the period, and forced goalie Liam Souliere to make eight saves on the penalty kill – but he was up to the task. Michigan State couldn't find an equalizer despite extended periods in the offensive zone and a 14-8 edge in shots on net in the period.
Second Period: Within the first five minutes of the second period, the teams traded power play goals. MSU tied the game at 3:23, when Miroslav Mucha tucked home a loose puck in front after a blast from David Gucciardi from the high slot. Just over a minute later, Tyler Paquette gave his team the lead back when he tipped home a puck at the left post – the blast from Schade at the left post ricocheted off the shaft of St. Cyr's stick and fell to the base of the post for Paquette to redirect into the back of the net. At 7:58, the Spartans gave up an odd-man rush, which resulted in a Simon Mack finish at the right post for a 3-1 lead. Despite the deficit, the Spartans remained assertive and a penalty that resulted in a second goal on the man advantage, as Jagger Joshua tipped home a backdoor pass from Karsen Dorwart. That line wasn't finished – it generated the equalizer with under a minute remaining. Off a faceoff in the left circle, Russell did a great job in the corner to secure the puck and dished it out to Dorwart at the dot, and he casually slid it across the low slot to a patient Joshua who scored his second of the night. Penn State took three penalties to MSU's one in the period.
Third Period: The third period remained up-tempo with end-to-end action. Penn State took a brief 4-3 lead on a Dzhaniyev goal at 3:43, but MSU made that lead short-lived with Jagger finishing off his hat trick 11 seconds after PSU scored. The visitors had the better shot count in the period, but MSU had some good looks at a go-ahead goal that went just wide.
Overtime: The Spartans were dominant in the early part of overtime, cycling the puck offensively until a slashing call against Jagger Joshua as whistled with 1:23 remaining in the extra period. The Spartan defense was up to the task – it limited Penn State to just two shots on the man advantage and Dylan St. Cyr did the rest as MSU came from behind for the second straight night.
