IOWA CITY, Iowa—Michigan State played tough against No. 1 ranked Iowa but it wasn't enough to get past the Hawkeyes downed on the road, 3-1.
It was a back-and-forth first quarter for the Spartans (3-7, 1-3 B1G), as Iowa (10-1, 2-1 B1G) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Alex Wesneski needed five and half minutes to find the net.
The Green and White responded quickly scoring three minutes later. Ellie Rutherford showed amazing stick work, maneuvering her way through Iowa defenders in the circle and drilled it into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1. Hawkeyes' freshman forward Dionne van Aalsum showed why she's one of the best players in the country, scoring her national-high 23rd goal of the season to extend the home team lead, 2-1 in the first quarter. The score remained the same going into halftime.
Michigan State was hanging with the No. 1 ranked Hawkeyes through two and half quarters of play but a Spartan penalty in the circle gave Iowa a penalty stroke opportunity at the 40th minute mark. Hillary Cox got the call for the penalty shot and she answered extending the home team lead, 3-1.
The Hawkeyes outshot the Spartans 19-7, and had the corner advantage, 7-3. MSU had two shots on goal as Rutherford and Bianca Pizano each had an attempt. Cecily Charles spent all 60 minutes in goal tallying six saves.
WORDS FROM HELEN KNULL
"We played a more complete game compared to Friday," Knull said. "We trained on minimizing errors against two top-three teams we faced this weekend. We still have a lot to play for in the Big Ten and we are excited to play Maryland this Friday in College Park."
The Spartans continue its B1G road trip as they face Maryland this Friday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m.
