Field Hockey Comes Up Short in 2OT Bout with Miami (Ohio)

OXFORD, Ohio— Michigan State's field hockey fell in a double overtime battle to Miami (Ohio), 2-1 on Sunday.
The Redhawks (11-7) capitalized early on a penalty corner as Berta Mata tracked Garcia Negrete for her 10th goal this season just 3:55 into the game. Not much action occurred after that, as both teams went into halftime with Miami still leading, 1-0. The Spartans offense was held to one shot attempt in the first half.
Michigan State's (3-11) offense came alive in the third quarter with an aggressive attack. Celina Riccardo gave the Spartans a much-needed goal near the 44th minute mark to tie the game, 1-1. She scored on a penalty corner that started with Emma O'Neill inserting to Ellie Wheatley who then located Riccardo. MSU's defense limited the Redhawks to only one shot attempt in the quarter.
Riccardo has scored in back-to-back games for the second time in her career, the last time was back in 2022 against Indiana and Central Michigan.
60 minutes was not enough for these teams as it took two overtime periods to determine a winner. Negrete netted her second goal of the game as she carried up left side and shot from top of attacking zone to give the Redhawks the victory.
In goal for MSU was Cecily Charles who played all 77 minutes and tallied one save. The Green and White led in shot attempts, 19-11, and each team had eight penalty corners.
The Spartans will be back on the road to Ann Arbor to face Michigan on Friday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m.
