EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics opened the 2024 season with its annual Green and White exhibition meet Saturday at Jenison Field House.
The White team earned a narrow victory over the Green team in this year's edition of the meet.
"I think we needed this," said head coach Mike Rowe. "It was perfect timing for us. The team needed to get in front of the judges to tell them what we really need to be successful. We have a lot of talent, a lot of depth and I'm really proud of everybody's efforts. We learned a lot of good things."
The White team took the vault title and also posted the top three scores of the afternoon on the event. Defending Big Ten vault champion Sage Kellerman posted the top score of the meet, while freshman MaKayla Tucker and sophomore Nikki Smith tied for second place. The White team also claimed the bars title and was once again led by top-three scores from Kellerman, Smith and Tucker. Smith finished first on bars, while Kellerman took runner-up honors and Tucker finished third.
Junior Gabrielle Stephen led the Green team to victory on beam with the highest score of the afternoon. Senior Delanie Harkness and junior Skyla Schulte finished in a tie for second to round out the top three scorers.
In one of the most exciting moments of the meet, several Spartans debuted their floor routines for the 2024 season. Smith collected her second event title of the day en route to leading the Green team to victory on the event, while Baleigh Garcia took second, and Harkness, sophomore Elle Beaufait and fifth-year senior Nyah Smith tied for third.
MSU officially opens the 2024 at the Super 16 meet the weekend of Jan. 5 in Las Vegas. The Spartans' home opener is set for Sunday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. against Iowa at Jenison Field House.
