Stephen Wins Second-Straight All-Around Title in Spartans' Loss at No. 17 Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa - No. 12 Michigan State captured three event titles and sophomore Gabrielle Stephen won her second-straight all-around title, but an uncharacteristic night for the Spartans resulted in a 196.150-195.725 loss Saturday night at No. 17 Iowa.
Iowa moves to 5-4-1 (2-1-1 B1G) with the win, while MSU, suffering its first conference loss of the season, falls to 4-2 (3-1 B1G).Â
BARS
The Spartans started the meet strong with their highest event score of the night on bars, totaling a 49.250 for a tie of the second-best score of the season on the event. Freshman Nikki Smith and senior Jori Jackard tied for the event title with matching 9.875s. The title marked Smith's second-straight bars event title, while Jackard's was her first of the season on any event. Stephen and junior Delanie Harkness posted the second-best scores of the night on the event with 9.850s. Sophomore Skyla Schulte scored a 9.800.

VAULT
Schulte led MSU to a 49.200 on vault in the second rotation, earning her first vault title of the season with a 9.900, which tied her career high. Schulte shared the title with Iowa's JerQuavia Henderson and Linda Zivat. All six athletes in MSU's vault lineup earned a score of 9.800 or better, with Stephen scoring a 9.850, senior Nyah Smith and freshman Sage Kellerman scoring 9.825s, and Nikki Smith and junior Baleigh Garcia posting 9.800s.
FLOOR
MSU posted a 49.025 on floor, led by Schulte with her second 9.900 of the night. Nikki Smith scored a 9.875, while Stephen scored a 9.850. Harkness posted a 9.725 and Nyah Smith scored a 9.675.
BEAM
Stephen tied her season high of 9.900 on beam to lead MSU in the fourth rotation. In the anchor position, Garcia scored a 9.850. Schulte and Nikki Smith wrapped up their all-around performances with a 9.800 and 9.775, respectively. Counting a fall, the Spartans posted a 48.250 team score on the event.
Stephen won the all-around with a 39.450, her second-best all-around score of the season, while Schulte placed second (39.400) and Nikki Smith finished third (39.325). The meet marked Stephen and Schulte's six-straight appearance in the all-around and Nikki Smith's fifth straight.
