Spartans Set for Regular Season Finale at Central Michigan
2/17/2023 10:35:00 AM | Wrestling
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – No. 23 Michigan State wrestling prepares for its final 2022-23 dual meet on Friday, Feb. 17, as the Spartans face Central Michigan inside McGuirk Arena. First whistle is slated for 7 p.m., with streaming via ESPN3.
This week, the Michigan State campus community suffered a mass-shooting event on Monday, Feb. 13. Our hearts are broken for the families of the victims, and for our community as a whole. Michigan State University, Spartan Athletics and MSU Wrestling thank all of the first responders who fought to protect our campus. We honor and remember those who lost their lives, in addition to those who continue to fight for theirs.
LAST TIME OUT
Seventh-year head coach Roger Chandler secured the 50th dual victory of his career, and No. 24 Michigan State wrestling completed the B1G regular season by taking home a 20-16 senior night win over the No. 22 Indiana Hoosiers on Friday, Feb. 10, inside Jenison Field House. MSU utilized back-to-back bonus point victories from redshirt senior Layne Malczewski and graduate Cameron Caffey to clinch the match at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Following Friday night's result, junior 157-pounder Chase Saldate became the second-straight Spartan to finish the Big Ten dual season with an undefeated 8-0 individual record, while junior 165-pounder Caleb Fish extended his MSU-best win tally to 22 after his win over IU.
Chandler reached his 50th career dual victory since assuming the top spot in East Lansing during the 2016-17 season last week against his alma mater. Chandler became just the fourth head coach in Michigan State program history to reach the 50-win mark, joining Spartan wrestling legends in Grady Peninger (213), Tom Minkel (173) and Fendley Collins (158). Chandler is the second-fastest head coach to reach 50 wins at MSU, doing so in less than seven seasons.
FIRST LOOK: CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Led by 37-year head coaching veteran Tom Borrelli, Central Michigan arrives in Friday night's dual with a 6-8 overall record that included a 5-1 mark in Mid-American Conference matches. The Chippewa win over Buffalo on Feb. 12, secured the program's second consecutive MAC West championship crown on the road in upstate New York. CMU has faced one of its three scheduled Big Ten Conference opponents this season. The Chippewas fell by a 50-3 margin against Penn State, and will wrestle Michigan State and Michigan this weekend.
Michigan State and Central Michigan will compete for the 37th time in an all-time series which dates to the 1986-87 season. The Chippewas lead the series by a 20-16 margin overall. Last season's bout in East Lansing saw the Spartans pick up a 19-17 senior night win on Feb. 18, 2022. A pin at the 3:58 mark at 184 pounds by Malczewski put the Spartans ahead for good.
