Spartans Fall in Overtime Thriller to Third-Seeded Kansas State, 98-93, in East Regional Semifinal

NEW YORK – Michigan State lost in an overtime thriller to third-seeded Kansas State, 98-93, Thursday night in the East Regional Semifinal at Madison Square Garden.
Junior guard A.J. Hoggard scored a career-high 25 points and was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line to lead MSU. Four other Spartans scored in double-figures as graduate forward Joey Hauser poured in 18 points and hit four 3-pointers, senior guard Tyson Walker made four 3-pointers and scored 16 points, sophomore guard Jaden Akins scored 16 while also making four 3's, and senior forward Malik Hall put in 11 points.
With MSU trailing 82-80 in regulation, Walker drove to the lane in the closing seconds and banked in a layup with five seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
In the extra session, Walker's 3-pointer with 3:32 left put MSU on top by three, 87-84, but the Wildcats scored four straight points to take an 88-87 lead one minute later. Hoggard then scored five consecutive points for the Spartans, first on an old-fashioned 3-point play with a layup and a free throw, followed by another driving layup to the basket to make it 92-90 in favor of the Spartans.
KSU answered with two free throws and an alley-oop dunk to go up 94-92 with just under a minute remaining. Hall split a pair of free throws to cut the margin to one at 94-93 with 42 seconds left, but Ismael Massoud hit a jumper with 15 ticks left to put the Wildcats on top by three, 96-93.
MSU had one last possession, but was unable to get a shot, and KSU guard Markquis Nowell finished the game with a layup as time expired in overtime. Nowell set an NCAA Tournament record with 19 assists and also scored 20 points for the Wildcats.

Michigan State ends the season with a 21-13 record, while Kansas State improves to 26-9.

- Kansas State went into the break with a 43-38 lead, shooting 62 percent from the floor (16-of-25), including 58 percent from 3-point land (7-of-12).
- The Wildcats took an early 5-0 lead before a dunk from Sissoko and a 3-pointer from Hauser tied the game at 5-all.

- The Wildcats led by as many as nine points early in the second half, 47-38, at the 18:21 mark, but the Spartans went on a 12-3 run to tie it at 50 with 14:39 left on an Akins tip-in.
- A 3-pointer by Akins and a layup by Hall put MSU on top, 60-57, with 11:27 left.
- Walker and Hauser hit back-to-back 3's to give MSU a 70-67 lead with 7:56 remaining, but KSU responded with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to go up, 77-70, at the 4:39 mark.
- Akins' fourth 3-pointer of the game cut the Wildcat lead to 80-78 with just over 90 seconds left; however, Nowell answered with a layup at the 1:07 mark to put KSU up by four at 82-78.
- MSU scored the final four points in regulation to send the game into overtime. Hall's tip-in with 52 seconds left made it 82-80, then after a missed Nowell 3-pointer, the Spartans called timeout with 19.7 seconds remaining. Walker drove to the lane and hit a layup off the glass to send the game into overtime.
- KSU outscored MSU in OT, 16-11, to advance to the NCAA East Regional Final. MSU had the lead on three separate occasions in the extra session, but after the score was tied at 92, the Wildcats went on a 6-1 run to close out the game.
- Michigan State made 13 3-pointers, tied for the second most this season.
- The Spartans shot 52 percent from 3-point range (13-of-25).
- MSU's 13 3-pointers tied a school record for an NCAA Tournament game (13 vs. LSU in 2019 East Regional Semifinal).
