EAST LANSING, Mich. – Notre Dame used a pair of big innings to defeat Michigan State softball by a final score of 8-0 on Tuesday night at Secchia Stadium. The Fighting Irish scored three runs in each of the first and third innings to build an advantage over the Spartans.
With a loss on Tuesday the Spartans fell to 11-21 overall this season. Michigan State has four more chances to get back into the win column this week, first facing Michigan on Wednesday night before meeting Minnesota for a three-game weekend B1G series.
Sophomore Madison Taylor (3-7) started in the circle for the Spartans pitching three innings. Taylor allowed six earned runs on six hits before being relieved by junior Ashley Miller to start the fourth inning. Miller pitched the final three innings of the contest allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out a pair of Notre Dame batters.
Freshman Britain Beshears was a bright spot in the MSU batting order for the second-straight game going 2-for-2 at the plate with a double off the left field wall. Seniors Jessica Mabrey and Kennedy Wyllie, as well as junior Alexis Barroso also had hits for Michigan State, while freshman Kayla Bane reached on a walk. Mabrey has safely reached base in 28 of MSU's 32 games this season with a season-best reached base streak of 15 consecutive games.
Notre Dame scored eight runs on 11 hits in the contest using three-run innings in the first and third to build a 6-0 lead over Michigan State. The Fighting Irish added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the run-rule victory. Carlli Kloss was 3-for-4 out of the lead-off spot, and Karina Gaskins and Anna Holloway each homered for the Fighting Irish. Micaela Kastor and Shannon Becker combined to shut-out the Spartans on five hits, with Becker taking the win due to Kastor not meeting the minimum innings requirement.
