Spartans Shatter Three School Records at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA - Windy and rainy conditions over the weekend proved to be no match for Michigan State track & field, as the Spartans set three school records and recorded a number of personal bests at the 127th edition of the Penn Relays.
"We competed well this weekend," said Michigan State Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Lisa Breznau. "We saw growth in managing a new environment, as well as a highly-competitive meet."
DAY 1
Three Spartans competed in individual events on Thursday to kick off the weekend. Senior Kendel Hammock earned a runner-up finish in his heat and 11th-place finish overall in the college section of the 400m hurdles, running 52.39. MSU also competed in two distance events, with junior Owen Huard running the men's 1500m in 3:45.38 to finish 12th, and sophomore Kate Stewart-Barnett competing in the women's 3000m steeplechase. Stewart-Barnett recorded an impressive runner-up finish in the event, clocking her first-career sub-10 in the event with a time of 9:56.76. Her time also ranks top-15 in the NCAA and second in the conference.
DAY 2
MSU began its record-breaking weekend in the relay events on Friday In the first event of the day for the Spartans, MSU's quartet of Sophia Lucki, Shakira Dancy, Olivia Millen and Emily Bardwell broke the school record in the women's distance medley relay, finishing sixth in the college section with a time of 11:30.87. The previous record in the event had stood since 1997.
The Spartan men followed in the college section of the DMR, also recording a sixth-place finish. MSU's team of John Petruno, Noah Sage, Jeremy Kloss and Gage Killewald ran 9:49.59.
In the first sprinting events of the weekend for the Spartans, the women's 4x100 of Alexys Wilson, Shakira Dancy, Anyssa Hall and Amani Nuels finished seventh in 47.17 to qualify to Saturday's final. MSU's men's team of Ian Thompson, Terrence Muex, Antonio Postell and Noah Sage placed 15th in 42.94.
In the final relays of the day, the men's and women's 4x400 relays, MSU's team of Muex, Hammock, Postell and Sage placed 12th in the Championship of American section with a time of 3:17.23, while MSU's team of Wilson, Dancy, Nala Barlow and Hall ran 3:57.11 in the women's 4x400 to place 11th.
DAY 3
The Spartans began the final day of competition with its second school record of the weekend, with Katie Osika, Kaitlyn Hynes, Judith Rector and Taylor Visscher setting the MSU record in the 4x1500 relay with a time of 17:39.25 to finish 10th, breaking the previous record of 18:10.94 set in 2018.
In a highly-competitive Championship of America 4xMile relay, the Spartan men's team of John Petruno, Luke Perelli, Jeremy Kloss and Owen Huard ran 16:29.14 to place 11th.Â
MSU's final school record of the weekend came in the women's 4x800, with MSU's quartet of Lauren Freeland, Shae Harbaugh, Alison Ziehl and Abbey Carvey running 8:37.12 to break a 41-year-old record and finish in fifth place.
The Spartans' 4x100 grabbed a third-place finish in the women's 4x100 final, finishing over a second faster than their prelim time with a time of 46.15.
In the final event of the weekend, MSU's men's 4x800 team of Jalen Smith, Hunter Zartman, Patrick Byrnes and Gage Killewald placed sixth in 7:30.23.
MSU has a week off of competition before the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Indiana from May 12 to May 14.
