EAST LANSING, Mich.-- Emma O'Neill became the first Spartan since 2016 to be named the Big Ten Offensive Player of The Week following a six-point performance win against Boston University in the season opener.
The Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, native played a crucial role as she netted all three goals for MSU in its 3-1 victory over the Terriers last Friday to become the first player to record a hat-trick since Megan Fenton back in 2016. O'Neill started her day with a solo shot nine minutes in the first stanza. O'Neill needed just 50 seconds to find the back of the cage for a second time with the help of teammate Tess Keppel. The senior final goal of her career day came in the 36-minute mark when captain Ellie Wheatley located O'Neill to seal the hat-trick performance.
The six-point performance by O'Neill is a career high for points in a game, topping her four-point performance against American University in the 2022 season opener.
"It means a lot not just to me but for the team as well to have our name on the board, hopefully we will bring the same energy this week," O'Neill said about what this award means.
O'Neill and the Spartans are back on the road this Friday, Sept. 1 at 3 p.m. against Kent State.
