KENT, Ohio—Michigan State's field hockey team (1-2) dropped its second consecutive game after Kent State found the back of the cage after 50 minutes of scoreless action for a 1-0 win.
Kent State (1-2) scored with a late go-ahead goal to break the 0-0 tie when Golden Flashes freshmen Eva Usoz scored her first goal of the season.
The Flashes outshot the Spartans 8-5 and held a 10-1 advantage in corners.
Celina Riccardo made a last-second effort to tie up the game at the end of regulation but Flashes goalie Cecile van Eijck secured the save to hold off the Spartans.
Lyra Gavino made her first career start in goal for the Spartans, playing all 60 minutes and registering three saves. Riccardo led with two shot attempts.
Michigan State will start a five-game home stretch when it faces Saint Joseph's at Ralph Young Field on Friday, Sept. 8 at 6.pm.
