EAST LANSING, Mich. - MSU head coach Robyn Fralick and the Michigan State women's basketball team opened practice on Thursday afternoon at the Breslin Center.
"I am really excited. Today is our first official day of practice. We have had a lot of time as a team, but today we got to crank it up a little bit," Fralick said addressing the media. "I was thinking about this when I was picking my kids up the other day. My seven-year old daughter sees me and runs and gets really excited. That is exactly how I feel today. I am excited to get going with this group."
Michigan State returns eight players from last season's team that went 16-14. The Spartans welcome back junior guard DeeDee Hagemann who has captured honorable mention All-Big Ten honors the last two seasons. Graduate guard Moira Joiner is the top scorer returning for the Spartans, scoring 10.1 ppg last season.
MSU welcome five newcomers this season, including two transfers in Jocelyn Tate (Bowling Green) and Lauren Ross (Western Michigan). In her first season at MSU, Fralick brings in three freshmen in Kennedy Blair, Mary Meng and Bree Robinson.
"There has been a good energy and a good competitiveness around this group," Fralick said. "This time of year will test is us even more, and it's a little harder. We have a little bit if time before the first game, so we are just going up against each other and the guys a lot, but the enthusiasm has been really good."
Both Spartan basketball teams will be on display on Friday, Oct. 13 for its annual Michigan State Madness.
Michigan State will begin exhibition action on Thursday, Nov. 2 against Davenport. Tip off time has yet to be determined.
