Six Spartans reach double figures in the victory.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State used a balanced attack to take down Northwestern in a wire-to-wire victory, 91-72, at the Breslin Center Wednesday evening.
The Spartans improve to 13-4 overall and 3-3 in Big Ten action, while Northwestern falls to 7-11 and 2-5 in league play.
For the third time this season, Michigan State had six players in double figures along with at Penn State (Dec. 30) and against Evansville (Nov. 19). MSU was led by graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault who scored 16 points with a career-high six assists and three blocks. Graduate guard/forward Tory Ozment and graduate guard Moira Joiner both added 14 points, while sophomore guard Abbey Kimball and junior guard DeeDee Hagemann scored 12 and 10 points respectively.
MSU had 26 assists on 32 made baskets, led by Hagemann's eight assists, which tied a season best.
Northwestern was led by 18 points off the bench from Melannie Daley.
The Spartans got off to a fast start, using a 10-0 run to go on top 13-3, leading to an early Northwestern timeout. Michigan State remained in control for the remainder of the first period. Both Kimball and Ayrault got MSU started on the right foot with seven points each in the first 10 minutes.
Michigan State scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to take a 31-11 lead midway through the period. After struggling from long range the last couple games, MSU found its rhythm against the Wildcats. In the first half alone six players hit a 3-pointer. Despite going over two minutes without scoring, the Spartans finished the half strong. Sophomore guard Theryn Hallock drilled a trey with three seconds left, as the half ended with the Spartans on top 50-28.
Late in the third period, the Wildcats used a 8-0 run to make it a 70-52 game. Northwestern out-scored Michigan State 24-21 in the third stanza. Despite the strong showing from NU, MSU still lead on the scoreboard 71-52, heading into the fourth quarter.
Michigan State responded, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the fourth period to re-establish an 81-54 lead midway through the period. The Spartans ended the game 13-for-31 from beyond the arc, led by Joiner's 4-for-7 day.
The Spartans hit the road for another tough road test against Minnesota on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. ET.
