14 Spartans PR in Track & Field's First Scored Meet

Men Place 3rd, Women 4th in Ann Arbor on Saturday
ANN ARBOR, MICH. – In Michigan State's first scored meet of the season the men placed third while the women were fourth as 14 Spartans notched personal records at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational Saturday.
"Today was very purposeful and fun," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "I was pleased with our competitive approach. Our goal is to maximize where we are on the day and we made some significant improvements."
MSU recorded one event win and seven second place finishes over the course of the meet. With 127.5 points the men finished third of four teams behind the meet hosts and Penn State and ahead of Purdue. The women tallied 59.0 points to finish fourth, also ahead of Purdue but behind the hosts, the Nittany Lions and Minnesota.
Sprints Start Day Strong
The Spartans lone victory of the day came by way of junior Logan Allen's 60-meter hurdles time of 8.02. For the second time in consecutive meets on the same track, sophomore Ian Thompson logged a personal best in the 60-meter dash, clinching third at 6.77.
For the women, senior Kaia Scheffler shined, recording PRs in both the 60m hurdles and dash at 8.50 and 7.87 respectively. Senior Shae Harbaugh paced to third in the 600 with a PR of her own, 1:30.66, good for the 28th-fastest 600 time in DI this year.
Going the Distance
Spartan milers highlighted the distance events, led by senior Andrew Nolan and junior Kate Stewart-Barnett's second place finishes. In his season debut Nolan finished second with a PR of 4:03.26 while Stewart-Barnett clocked in at 4:46.3, only a second behind the winner.
Senior Owen Huard picked up a runner-up finish of his own in the 3K race, a personal best time of 8:04.61 which was also good for the 24th fastest time in the nation this season. Sophomore Tim Cherry also blitzed to a 2nd place finish of his own in 1:51.17 in the 800.
Jumpers Boost MSU in Field Events
Second place finishes in each of the three jump events that MSU had entries in added on points for the squad. For the second week in a row in Ann Arbor, sophomore Natalie Blake notched a PR in the pole vault, finishing second only two a technicality, however clearing 4.00 meters for the first time in her career.
On the men's side it was graduate senior Heath Baldwin that earned second in the long jump with a leap of 7.16m while sophomore Brady Schultz took second, clearing a 2.00m high jump.
The Spartans will be back in action Friday and Saturday Jan. 26-27 as the squad splits up between meets in Louisville, Ky. for the Lenny Lyles Invite and the Michigan Invite in Ann Arbor, Mich..
