10/2/2024 11:04:00 AM | General
Here's a look at the week ahead (October 2-8) for Michigan State Athletics:
Men's and Women's Basketball
The Michigan State men's and women's basketball teams will tip off the 2024-25 season with Michigan State Madness on Friday, Oct. 4. Breslin Center doors open at 6 p.m. After nearly an hour of player autographs and coach photos, the formal program, including team intros, skills contests and scrimmages begins at 7 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
Women's Soccer
No. 5 Michigan State hosts Michigan on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in front of what is sure to be a capacity crowd at DeMartin Stadium. When the Wolverines made their last trip to DeMartin in 2022, the Spartans drew their first ever crowd of more than 3,000 spectators. Although the Spartans are yet to suffer a defeat in 2024, they're looking to get back on a win streak after a pair of ties last week.
Football
It's a short week for the Spartans coming off a Saturday night contest, as Michigan State travels to No. 6 Oregon for a Friday night showdown in Eugene, marking MSU's second Top 10 opponent in less than a week. This will be fourth meeting between the Spartans and the Ducks since 2014, but the first as conference opponents.
Cross Country
The men's and women's cross country programs will be in action this weekend for the first time since Sept. 13, as the Spartans travel to South Bend, Indiana, for the Joe Piane Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame, on Oct. 4.
Ice Hockey
The No. 4 Michigan State hockey team opens up the 2024-25 season on the road Friday and Saturday at Lake Superior State. The Spartans have not been ranked higher than No. 4 since November 2007. MSU returns 67.7 percent of its scoring from a year ago, and with 102 goals by returners the Spartans rank second in the nation among Division I teams.
Men's Soccer
Coming off a week that includes a pair of 1-0 victories at UCLA and at home vs. Northwestern, the men's soccer team travels to No. 12 Maryland on Saturday. The Spartans are led in scoring by junior midfielder Jonathan Stout, who secured the only goal in the victory over the Bruins. The victory resulted in MSU claiming Goalkeeper (Zac Kelly), Freshman (Brandon Munson) and Offensive Player of the Week (Stout) honors from the Big Ten.
Men's Golf
The Spartans travel to Notre Dame this weekend for the Fighting Irish Classic at Warren Golf Course on Oct. 6-7. In its most recent tournament, the Windon Memorial Classic at Conway Farms Golf Club outside Chicago, Michigan State started a lineup that featured two freshman, two sophomores and one junior.
Volleyball
Michigan State continues its four-game stretch of road contests to open Big Ten play as it travels to Indiana on Friday and No. 10 Purdue on Sunday. The match against the Boilermakers will be nationally televised on Big Ten Network (7:30 p.m.). Last Sunday, the Spartans took the first set from No. 4 Penn State and scored 21 or more points in two other narrow set losses. Taylor Preston led MSU with 18 kills.
Field Hockey
Michigan State wraps up three consecutive non-conference games in the middle of the Big Ten schedule with a Sunday home contest vs. Kent State (1 p.m.). Spartan head coach Helen Knull is an alumna and former assistant coach at Kent State. As a student-athlete, Knull was a four-year starter, two-year captain and a two-time All-American, leading the Golden Flashes to the NCAA Tournament for four straight years.
Men's Tennis
Members of the men's tennis program continue action at this week's M15 Ann Arbor tournament. Senior Josh Portnoy will be in action in the main draw starting Wednesday, while several other MSU student-athletes will be competing unattached.
