Ayrault Family Reunion Highlights Spartan Exhibition Win over Wayne State

Six Spartans reach double figures in the victory.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball opened the 2024-25 season with a dominating 101-40 exhibition win over Wayne State Monday night at the Breslin Center.
The game was a reunion for the Ayrault family as graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault took on her sister sophomore guard Annabel Ayrault. The players' father, Andy, is an assistant coach for the Warriors.
The Spartans had six players in double figures, led by 16 points from both junior guard Theryn Hallock and junior forward Grace VanSlooten. In her first game since transferring from Oregon, VanSlooten added six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Freshman center Inés Sotelo added 13 points in her Spartan debut. Senior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate, redshirt-freshman guard Kennedy Blair and graduate guard Jaddan Simmons all added 11 points. Ayrault scored eight points with a game-high eight assists and four blocks.
All 14 active players played for Michigan State.
Wayne State was led by 10 points and seven assists from Shea Tripp. Annabel Ayrault went 1-for-2 from the field for three points and one assist.
The Spartans scored the first 21 points of the game before ZaMaria Polk put the Warriors on the board. Michigan State added a 7-0 run to make it a 30-2 game just before the end of the period. VanSlooten scored 10 points in the first quarter to set the pace for MSU. Michigan State shot 73.7 percent from the field (14-for-19) in the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, Michigan State continued to excel, scoring 11 of the first 14 points of the period. Michigan State ended the half on a 19-0 run to lead 58-5 at the half. Hallock led all scorers with 16 points at the half, while VanSlooten added 12. In the first half, the Spartans forced eight turnovers with seven steals. The Warriors struggled from the field, going 2-for-35 from the field.
Wayne State showed its fight in the third quarter tighten the game a bit. MSU was able to get Sotelo, freshman forward Juliann Woodard and Blair some time in the second half. Seven different Spartans scored in the third quarter alone, led by six from Simmons.
The Spartans went cold in the fourth quarter going 0-for-6 from the field before a Blair basket stopped the drought. Blair played all 10 minutes of the final period, going 3-for-6 from the field and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe.
For the second-straight season, Michigan State will open the regular season against Oakland. The Spartans will host the Golden Grizzlies on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

• MSU's largest lead was 62 points at the 3:54 mark of the third quarter after a steal and a jumper by Jaddan Simmons.
