
Spartans Rally but Fall Short to Memphis, 71-63, in Maui Invitational

LAHAINA, Hawaii – Michigan State's men's basketball team tied the game early in the second half and trailed by four near the mid-point, but Memphis used an 11-0 run to break open a close game en route to a 71-63 win over the Spartans in the Maui Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman guard Jase Richardson scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Spartans, while senior guard Jaden Akins added 12 points and five rebounds and senior forward Frankie Fidler had 10 points and five rebounds.

- The Spartans tied the game at 36-all early in the second half after a 3-pointer from junior forward Jaxon Kohler and a driving layup from redshirt freshman guard Jeremy Fears Jr.
- The Tigers responded with five-straight points to take a 41-36 before a jumper from Kohler (13:41) and a driving layup from sophomore forward Coen Carr (12:54) pulled MSU to within 46-42.
- Memphis followed that up with an 11-0 run over 1:43 and took a 57-42 lead on a three-point play from Moussa Cisse with 10:50 to play.
- MSU did not go away, as baskets from Richardson (3:20) and Fidler (2:47) cut the lead to seven points, 66-59.
- Memphis led by nine points, 68-59, when Kohler scored on a layup (1:20) and free throws from Fears with 45 seconds left narrowed the gap to 68-63.
- That was as close as the Spartans would get as a 3-pointer from Richardson was off the mark with 26 seconds left and the Tigers hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the win.
- The Spartans went into the half trailing by just three points, 34-31, thanks to a 3-pointer from Richardson as time wound down.
- Memphis had jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead but 3-pointers from Akins and junior guard Tre Holloman gave the Spartans a 10-7 lead.
- The first half was back and forth with four lead changes and three ties before Memphis went on an 8-2 run and took a 32-23 lead on a dunk from Tyrese Hunter at the 3:49 mark, forcing MSU to call a timeout.
- Fears hit a pair of a baskets and Richardson's trey pulled MSU to within three points at the break.
- Michigan State was outscored, 33-22, in the paint by Memphis.
- The Spartans committed 13 turnovers and the Tigers scored 22 points off those.
