Balanced Attack Helps MSU Women Breeze Past Yale, 100-44

EAST LANSING, Mich. - For the second-straight game, the Michigan State women's basketball team reached the 100-point mark, defeating Yale, 100-44, Friday night at the Breslin Center.
This is the second-straight season that the Spartans have had back-to-back 100-point games doing it against Detroit Mercy and Evansville last season.
The Spartans have opened 2-0 for the second time in as many seasons under head coach Robyn Fralick. Michigan State also opened 2-0 for the 10th-straight season since going 1-1 to open the 2014-15 season. Yale falls to 1-1 with the loss.
Once again, MSU was led junior forward Grace VanSlooten, who led all scorers with 19 points with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior guard Theryn Hallock scored 13 points, while redshirt-freshman guard Kennedy Blair was once again stellar off the bench with 12 points and seven rebounds. Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault added 10 points and six boards to go along with three assists for MSU. The Spartans had 21 assists in the game with five players collecting three or more helpers on the night.
The Bulldogs were led by eight points and 10 rebounds from Mount Pleasant native Mackenzie Egger.
Michigan State used a 7-0 run to take a 13-4 lead with six minutes left in the period. The Spartans hit a drought missing five-straight field goals before making three buckets in 28 seconds, giving MSU a 20-8 lead that led to a Bulldog timeout. The run ballooned to 11-0 before a Yale free throw made it a 25-9 game to end the quarter. VanSlooten had out-scored the Bulldogs in the first quarter with 10 points to lead MSU.
In the second quarter, the Spartans took their first 20-point lead after an Ayrault free throw, 31-11, with seven minutes left in the half. For the second-straight game the Spartan defense was stifling, forcing 20 turnovers in the first half. Michigan State closed the half strong on a 6-0 run to lead 50-18. In the first 20 minutes of action, VanSlooten (14), Hallock (10) and Ayrault (10) had all reached double figures. MSU had 11 steals with four blocks.
Both teams started slow offensively in the third period with both teams going over four minutes without a field goal. VanSlooten's seventh field goal of the game got the Spartans back on the scoring column. In the closest quarter, the Spartans out-scored the Bulldogs, 17-16.
Michigan State scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter to take a 82-34 advantage. Blair once against had a solid game for MSU with 12 points in the fourth period alone. Redshirt-freshman center Mary Meng was just shy of her career high with eight points and five rebounds.
The Spartans continue four-game homestand on Monday, Nov. 11 against Eastern Michigan at 6:30 p.m. Monday is the annual Hoops For Troops - Active Military and Veterans receive complimentary admission with presentation of a valid ID.

• After netting 107 points in Tuesday's season-opener and 100 in Friday's Victory for MSU over Yale, Michigan State has scored 100 points in back-to-back games for only the second time in school history and both times have come in the last two years, after last year's consecutive games with 105 points (105-44 vs. Detroit Mercy on 11/16/23; 105-49 vs. Evansville on 11/19/23).

• The Spartan defense held the opposition to single-digit scoring in a quarter in three-straight quarters after holding Oakland to nine points in the fourth quarter on Tuesday and limiting Yale to nine points in the first and second stanzas Friday night . . . overall, it's the fourth time that MSU has limited its opponents to single-digit scoring in a quarter along with the second quarter Tuesday night.
• The Spartans have also held the opposition to 10 points or less in six of the eight quarters this season, holding Oakland to 10 points in the first frame Tuesday and held Yale to 10 points in the fourth frame Friday . . . Yale's 16 points in the third quarter was the most allowed by the MSU defense this season, while Oakland's highest scoring quarter was also the third quarter on Tuesday with 15 points.
• Along with scoring 100+ points for the second game in a row, Michigan State made 30+ field goals for the second time in as many games, with 33 field goals Friday after making 35 vs. Oakland . . . MSU also shot 50 percent or better in both games, making 52.4 percent (33-of-63) Friday vs. Yale and 50.0 percent (35-of-70) vs. Oakland.
• The Spartan defense also forced over 30 turnovers for the second-straight game with 31 Friday night vs. Yale after forcing Oakland into 33 miscues . . . MSU had a 45-7 points off turnovers advantage Friday, as Michigan State committed 12 turnovers.
• All 14 active Spartans saw the court for the second game in a row, and 12 of the 14 scored and 10 of the 14 collected at least one rebound.
• Four Spartans posted double-digits, led by junior forward Grace VanSlooten with an MSU career-high 19 points after 15 points in her Spartan debut on Tuesday . . . VanSlooten added five rebounds, three assists and two steals Friday night.
• Junior guard Theryn Hallock tossed in 13 points to post her 20th double-digit scoring outing . . . Hallock has scored double-figures in her last three games, along with five in the last six games and 11 of her last 13 contests dating back to last season.
• Hallock has scored 10 or more points in 19 of her last 27 contests since Nov. 30, 2023, her first double-figure outing last season after scoring in single-digits the first six games of the season, and only scoring in single-digits in back-to-back games once during that span.
• Redshirt-freshman guard Kennedy Blair netted 12 points Friday to register double-figures for the second outing in as many games as a Spartan after 10 points in her Green & White debut on Tuesday, after missing the entire 2023-24 season with an injury. . . Blair also pulled down seven rebounds, swiped three steals and dished out one assists, new top marks for rebounds and steals.
• Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault chipped in with 10 points to round out the four Spartans in double-figures and also register her 40th career game in double-figures . . . Ayrault posted 10+ points in her 15th-straight game and in 26 of her last 31 games played since the start of the 2023-24 season . . . with 10 points Friday, Ayrault has now recorded 932 points, just 68 shy of becoming the 31st Spartan women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in her MSU career.
• Hallock and graduate guard Jaddan Simmons dished out four assists each, along with three each by Tate, VanSlooten and Ayrault.
• MSU swiped 18 steals Friday night after 22 steals in Tuesday's opener . . . four different Spartans led the way with three steals each, Blair, senior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate, junior guard Emma Shumate and freshman forward Ines Sotelo, while VanSlooten had a pair of steals, followed by four others had one steal apiece.
• MSU led from start-to-finish for the second game in a row, with the Spartans' largest scoring run coming with 15-straight points in the fourth quarter, capped by Blair scoring three the old-fashioned way with 6:17 left on a bucket and free throw for an 82-34 Michigan State advantage . . . the Spartans took their largest lead of the night at 59 points at 100-41 with 30 seconds remaining on a three-point play by freshman forward Juliann Woodard.
