Spartan Women Face No. 5 Ohio State in Annual Pink Game

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball will conclude a busy week, taking on No. 5/5 Ohio State on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. MSU will also celebrate its annual Pink Game for breast cancer awareness. This is the second meeting between the Spartans and the Buckeyes with OSU taking the first in Columbus, 70-65 on Jan. 17. Jason Knapp and Meghan McKeown will be on the call for the Peacock.
• The Spartans had their four-game winning streak halted at No. 14/13 Indiana on Thursday in a 94-91 track meet. MSU is now 17-6 overall and 7-5 in league contests. No. 5/5 Ohio State defeated Minnesota on the road 71-47 on Thursday.
• The Green & White's 53 points in the first half against IU was their most in a Big Ten game this season and their second-most overall in the first 20 minutes of the season since 57 in first half vs. Coastal Carolina (12/21/23).
• DeeDee Hagemann now has 399 assists for her career, needing just one more to become the ninth MSU player with 400 assists, and just three more to take over the No. 8 spot on the Spartans' career assists list, currently held by Brittney Thomas (2007-11) with 401.

SCOUTING OHIO STATE
No. 5/5 Ohio State comes to the Breslin Center with a stellar 20-3 record and are 11-1 in Big Ten play. The only loss the OSU has suffered in league contests was to Michigan, 69-60, in Ann Arbor. Ohio State is the only team in the conference to defeat Iowa this year.
The Buckeyes are second in the Big Ten in scoring defense, allowing only 62.4 ppg, while standing fifth in scoring offense (80.7 ppg). Ohio State is stellar on the defensive end of the court, leading the league with 10.3 steals per game.
Jacy Sheldon is fourth in the Big Ten in scoring, averaging 17.6 ppg, while also standing first in steals with 2.3 spg. Cotie McMahon is 17th in the B1G in scoring with 14.1 ppg, and 15th in rebounding (6.4 rpg). Overall, OSU has three players in the top 15 in the league in steals, along with Sheldon Celeste Taylor is fourth (2.0 spg) and Taylor Thierry is tied for sixth (1.7 spg).
Kevin McGuff is in his 11th season at the helm of the Buckeyes with a 192-101 record. Overall, he is in his 22nd season at Ohio State with a record of 447-200.

Despite a season-high 18 points from graduate guard/forward Tory Ozment, the Michigan State women's basketball dropped a defensive battle with No. 17/16 Ohio State, 70-65, at Value City Arena on Jan. 14.
Both teams came into Sunday's contest averaging nearly 90 points per game in a match-up that saw both teams shoot well below their season averages under tough defensive pressure.

LOOKING TO BEAT THE BEST
Michigan State is still looking for its first win over a ranked team this season. The Spartans are 0-3 this year with losses to then-No. 4/3 Iowa and then-No. 17-16 Ohio State. On Thursday, Michigan State lost another close battle to No. 14/14 Indiana, 94-91. All three of the Spartans' losses to ranked teams have come by five points or less. Michigan State head coach Robyn Fralick reached a career milestone with a win against CMU on Dec. 17. She captured her 200th career win, now holding a 209-82 career record in eight seasons as a head coach at Ashland, Bowling Green and Michigan State.
AYRAULT SWATTING HER WAY INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault swatted four blocks against Minnesota on Feb. 5 to register at least one block for the fourth-straight game and the 19th game with at least one block. It was her 16th game this season with multiple blocks, in addition to her eighth game with three or more blocks.

She becomes the 30th Spartan women's basketball player to join the MSU 1,000-Point Club and the first since All-American Nia Clouden hit her 1,000th point on Jan. 7, 2021 vs. Maryland. Clouden finished her career in 2022 with 1,882 points. Joiner now 1,066 career points which puts her 28th all-time in the MSU record books, passing Brenda Jezowski (1980-85) with 1,034 points.

HAGEMANN'S MAKING A LASTING IMPACT
Junior guard DeeDee Hagemann is approaching etching her name in the MSU record books once again. With 109 assists so far this season, she has reached the 100 assist mark her first three seasons. She is the first person since Taryn McCutcheon (2017-20) to reach 100 assists in her first three seasons. McCutcheon is the all-time MSU leader in assists with 568. She also currently holds an assist/turnover ratio of 2.95, which would break her own record of 2.61 set last season.
DEEDEE MAKING HER MARK

BOUNCING BACK
Michigan State has had a history of bouncing back after losses this season. After the Spartans previous five losses, MSU has rebounded with a vengeance. Four of the five wins after losses have been by 18 points or more.
TRIPLE-DIGIT THREATS
With a 105-66 win over Coastal Carolina on Dec. 21, MSU has now broken the triple-digit mark four times in the 10 games this season. This is the first-time ever that Michigan State has had four 100-point games in a season.

MSU head coach Robyn Fralick announced the signing of four National Letters of Intent, including Sinai Douglas, Helen Holley, Juliann Woodard (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County High School) and Inés Sotelo.
Douglas is a 5-4 guard, who is a native of Toledo, Ohio. She attends Toledo Start High School and is coached by Dane Franklin. Douglas is currently ranked No. 87 in the ESPNW HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings.
Holley is a 6-1 forward, who is a native of Cleveland Ohio, plays for head coach Kevin Byrne at the Gilmour Academy. As a junior, she averaged 14.7 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. She captured second-team All-Ohio honors last season.
Woodard is a 6-0 forward, who is a native of North Vernon, Indiana, plays for head coach Kristi Sigler at Jennings County High School. Woodard is currently ranked No. 58 in the ESPNW HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings.
Sotelo Miguez is a 6-3 forward, who is a native of Ourense, Spain. She has extensive international experience, including playing with the U18 Spanish National Team last summer in Konya, Turkey at the Eurobasket Tournament.

By dishing out career-tying 10 assists against Indiana, Hagemann now has 399 helpers for her career, holding the No. 9 spot on the Spartans' career assists list.
FRALICK HITS MILESTONE
Michigan State head coach Robyn Fralick reached a career milestone with a win against CMU on Dec. 17. She captured her 200th career win, now holding a 209-82 career record in eight seasons as a head coach at Ashland, Bowling Green and Michigan State.
AYRAULT SWATTING HER WAY INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault swatted four blocks against Minnesota on Feb. 5 to register at least one block for the fourth-straight game and the 19th game with at least one block. It was her 16th game this season with multiple blocks, in addition to her eighth game with three or more blocks.
The four blocks adjusts Ayrault's season-total to 52 blocks on the year, the most in a single-season since 2009-10 when Allyssa DeHaan had 101 rejections. The 52 blocks moved Ayrault up to No. 7 on MSU's single-season blocks list, passing the 50 blocks by Kelli Roehrig (2004-05), and now just one shy of the No. 6 spot held by Kristen Rasmussen (1999-2000) with 53 rejections.
IF YOU CAN'T BEAT HER...JOINER
Graduate guard Moira Joiner topped the 1,000 career point mark with a 3-pointer at the 6:39 mark for her fifth point of the game against Purdue on Jan. 24. She becomes the 30th Spartan women's basketball player to join the MSU 1,000-Point Club and the first since All-American Nia Clouden hit her 1,000th point on Jan. 7, 2021 vs. Maryland. Clouden finished her career in 2022 with 1,882 points. Joiner now 1,066 career points which puts her 28th all-time in the MSU record books, passing Brenda Jezowski (1980-85) with 1,034 points.
Joiner made one 3-pointer against Indiana to separate from a tie with Kalisha Keane (2007-11) for the No. 5 spot on MSU's career 3-pointers list, as Joiner now has sole possession with 184 treys.
HAGEMANN'S MAKING A LASTING IMPACT
Junior guard DeeDee Hagemann is approaching etching her name in the MSU record books once again. With 109 assists so far this season, she has reached the 100 assist mark her first three seasons. She is the first person since Taryn McCutcheon (2017-20) to reach 100 assists in her first three seasons. McCutcheon is the all-time MSU leader in assists with 568. She also currently holds an assist/turnover ratio of 2.95, which would break her own record of 2.61 set last season.
DEEDEE MAKING HER MARK
Junior guard DeeDee Hagemann now has 399 assists for her career, needing just one more to become the ninth MSU women's basketball player with 400 assists, and just three more to take over the No. 8 spot on the Spartans' career assists list, currently held by Brittney Thomas (2007-11) with 401, and five more to pass Tamika Matlock (1995-97) for the No. 7 spot with 403 helpers.
AROUND THE BIG TEN
This season, Michigan State is second in the Big Ten in scoring margin (+18.6) and second in assists (19.5 apg). The Spartans are also second in the league in 3-point field goals made, averaging 9.52 per game. MSU is second in turnover margin (+7.26) and first in assist/turnover ratio (1.78).
Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault leads the Spartans in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game, which is 10th in the conference, while graduate guard Moira Joiner is 11th with 14.9 ppg. Ayrault is also seventh in rebounding with 7.3 rpg and fourth in field goal percentage (.530). Junior guard DeeDee Hagemann is seventh in the league in assists, averaging 5.0 apg and first in assist/turnover ratio (2.95). Ayrault is also second in the conference in blocks, averaging 2.3 bpg, behind Wisconsin's Serah Williams.
PUTTING IN THE MINUTES
Due to significant injuries this season, the Spartans have been forced to play with nine players for much of the season. Many MSU players have been logging in a lot of minutes so far this year. Moira Joiner is 12th in the Big Ten in minutes played, averaging 31.1 mpg. DeeDee Hagemann is second on the team and 17th in the league with 30.9 mpg, while Theryn Hallock is third in minutes off the bench with 25.5 mpg, while Abbey Kimball is fourth with 24.7 mpg. MSU has seven players who are averaging over 20 minutes per game.
BOUNCING BACK
Michigan State has had a history of bouncing back after losses this season. After the Spartans previous five losses, MSU has rebounded with a vengeance. Four of the five wins after losses have been by 18 points or more.
TRIPLE-DIGIT THREATS
With a 105-66 win over Coastal Carolina on Dec. 21, MSU has now broken the triple-digit mark four times in the 10 games this season. This is the first-time ever that Michigan State has had four 100-point games in a season.
COMING NEXT YEAR
MSU head coach Robyn Fralick announced the signing of four National Letters of Intent, including Sinai Douglas, Helen Holley, Juliann Woodard (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County High School) and Inés Sotelo.
Douglas is a 5-4 guard, who is a native of Toledo, Ohio. She attends Toledo Start High School and is coached by Dane Franklin. Douglas is currently ranked No. 87 in the ESPNW HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings.
Holley is a 6-1 forward, who is a native of Cleveland Ohio, plays for head coach Kevin Byrne at the Gilmour Academy. As a junior, she averaged 14.7 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. She captured second-team All-Ohio honors last season.
Woodard is a 6-0 forward, who is a native of North Vernon, Indiana, plays for head coach Kristi Sigler at Jennings County High School. Woodard is currently ranked No. 58 in the ESPNW HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings.
Sotelo Miguez is a 6-3 forward, who is a native of Ourense, Spain. She has extensive international experience, including playing with the U18 Spanish National Team last summer in Konya, Turkey at the Eurobasket Tournament.
O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!
Michigan State head coach Robyn Fralick has announced guard/forward Julia Ayrault and guard Moira Joiner as team captains, as voted on by the players on the 2023-24 women's basketball team. The duo are the first captains that Michigan State has had since the 2019-20 season, when Victoria Gaines and Taryn McCutcheon were tabbed team leaders.
LAST TIME OUT
In a battle of two potent offenses, the Michigan State women's basketball team's upset bid came up short, falling to No. 14/13 Indiana, 94-91, Thursday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
It was the most points scored by the Spartans in the series with the Hoosiers since the thrilling 111-109 overtime quadruple overtime loss in the Big Ten Tournament in 2018.
Overall, five Spartans reached double figures in the loss, led by graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault, who scored 25 points, her most in a Big Ten game this season and tied for her second-most overall this year, adding four rebounds.
Junior guard DeeDee Hagemann recorded her first double-double of the season, tying her career high with 10 assists and adding 19 points. Graduate guard Moira Joiner scored 14 points, while sophomore guard Theryn Hallock added 13 points off the bench.
