BOCA RATON, Fla. – Michigan State softball got out to a 2-0 lead on Sunday morning before a late-inning rally by Florida Atlantic led to a 4-2 loss for the Spartans at Joan Joyce Field.
Senior Liv Grey (0-3) made her third start of the weekend and pitched five scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth. Grey finished with a trio of strikeouts, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Junior Madison Taylor pitched in relief of Grey, retiring two batters in the sixth.
Freshman Jaeya Butler had a big performance for the Spartans on Sunday, finishing with a pair of extra-base hits that included a double and her first career home run. Sophomores Hannah Hawley and Sydney Doloszycki also finished with a pair of base knocks. Hawley doubled in the first inning.
Senior Jenae Wash and sophomore Britain Beshears also recorded hits for MSU, with Beshears driving in the first run of the contest.
Beshears put the game's first run on the board in the top of the fourth after her single up the middle scored Butler from second. Butler doubled to the left field wall to lead-off the frame. Michigan State's lead was extended to 2-0 in the sixth when Butler slugged her first career home run over the center field fence.
FAU got on the board with a big home half of the sixth that saw them post four runs. MSU maintained a 2-1 advantage before a three-run Owl home run to right put FAU ahead for good.
