Walker Named Second Team, Hall and Hoggard Earn Honorable Mention Honors
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's basketball senior guard Tyson Walker was selected to the All-Big Ten Conference Second Team by the league's coaches and media, the league office announced on Tuesday, March 12.
Walker was one of three MSU players to earn all-conference honors, as graduate forward Malik Hall and senior guard A.J. Hoggard were both honorable mention selections by the coaches and media.
Walker earns his second All-Big Ten honor with a pair of second team nods. He finished the regular season leading the team in scoring with 18.4 points per game, which ranks fifth in the Big Ten, adding 3.0 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. Walker also ranks 11th in the conference in field goal percentage (44.8%), 14th in assists (2.97 apg), third in steals (1.90 spg) and 13th in 3-point field goals made (1.83/game).
Walker, who scored his 1,000th point at Michigan State earlier this year and reached the 2,000-point for his college career in the team's win over Northwestern on March 6, is the only active Division I player in the country with at least 2,000 career points, 500 assists and 300 steals. Additionally, he is one of only five Division I players this year averaging at least 18.4 points per game, 2.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game.
Hoggard earns All-Big Ten honors for the second-straight year after being an honorable mention selection by the coaches last year and a third team honoree from the media. This year, Hoggard is third on the team in scoring (10.9 ppg), leads the team with 5.0 assists per game, while adding 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals. He ranks fifth in the league in assists, 14th in free throw percentage (78.8 percent), 9th in steals and third in assist/turnover ratio (3.04, 155 assists and 51 turnovers).
Hoggard, who passed the 1,000-point mark for his career in MSU's win over Michigan at home on Jan. 30, is just one seven players in Michigan State history with at least 1,000 points and 500 career assists (joining a list that includes Cassius Winston, Mateen Cleaves, Scott Skiles, Denzel Valentine, Drew Neitzel and Kailin Lucas). Hoggard needs just two more assists to pass Neitzel for fifth all-time. In addition, Hoggard is just one of three MSU players since 1992-93 with at least 1,000 points, 500 assists and 300 rebounds in their careers, joining Denzel Valentine and Cassius Winston.
Hall earns his first All-Big Ten honor with his honorable mention selection by the coaches and the media. He finished second on the team in scoring with 12.7 points per game and leads the team in rebounds (5.7 rpg) and field goal percentage (52.7%). In Big Ten games only, Hall averaged 14.5 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 54.3 percent from the field and 48.4 percent from 3-point land. He was 18th in the league in scoring in Big Ten games, tied for 17th in rebounds and fifth in field goal percentage.
Hall was one of three MSU players to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career this season and he is one of just 22 players in program history with at least 1,000 career points and 600 rebounds.
Senior Davis Smith was the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
