EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 18-ranked men's tennis swept Wisconsin 7-0 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center Sunday, improving their record to 16-3 and completing a perfect home weekend to start Big Ten play 2-0.
"Great match by the guys today," Head Coach Harry Jadun said. "To not only beat but sweep a team coached by Danny Westerman, it means your team played tough, they believed in big moments, and now we're in the thick of the Big Ten season."
For MSU, it was the first win over Wisconsin in nine matches, last having beat the Badgers on April 11, 2014. It is also the Spartans' first 7-0 sweep in B1G play in exactly 11 years, last doing so against Wisconsin on March 24, 2013. The Badgers, falling to 1-14, were shorthanded and defaulted forfeits at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles slots, yet the Spartans still dominated on each court.
In doubles, regardless of the free point on court three, MSU swept the other two doubles points as the combos of graduate Graydon Lair with sophomore Ozan Baris and graduate Sebastien Collard with freshman Taym Alazmeh both were victorious, 6-3.
MSU's lead was extended to 2-0 after Wisconsin's forfeit on court six to start singles. Lair made quick work on court four, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to make it a three-point match. The 34th-ranked graduate Ronald Hohmann got back in the win column to clinch the victory for MSU, also victorious in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 on main court.
With the match already decided the remaining Spartans would play out their matches, starting with national No. 11 Baris on court two. The Okemos, Mich. native would come out triumphant 6-3, 6-2, breaking his opponent on match point when he was down love-40.
The rookie Alazmeh was the next off, improving his record to above .500 with his sixth win of the year, triumphant 4-6, 6-3 [10-8] on court six. All attention would turn to court three where Collard and Wisconsin's Collin Beduhn played to a hard-fought full third set tiebreak in which Collard came out on top, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Next up, the Spartans will head west for their first road matches of the Big Ten season, facing tough opponents in Illinois on Saturday and Northwestern on Sunday, both with noon first serves. MSU is 3-0 in true road matches on the season.
