
Baldwin in Second Place Behind Three PRs, an Event Win in First Day of Heptathlon National Championship

BOSTON, Mass. – MSU graduate student Heath Baldwin resides in second place in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Heptathlon Championships through day one of the event Friday behind three personal bests and an event win.

Through four of the heptathlon's seven-events at The TRACK at New Balance, the Kalamazoo, Mich. native has collected 3,548 points, which is on pace for a heptathlon PR, and is 116 points behind the leader, Leo Neugebauer of Texas.
To start the day in the first of the morning in this, Baldwin's sixth NCAA Championship between indoor and outdoor seasons, he blitzed to a 7.02 60 dash personal best to win his heat and finish sixth overall.
In the long jump, Baldwin again recorded a new PR, leaping to 7.42 meters to claim once again sixth out of the field of 16.
It was in the shot put that the experienced Spartan made up more ground in the standings, PRing for a third time in as many events to kick off the national championships. Baldwin hurled for a distance of 15.87 meters to finish runner up in the heptathlon's lone throwing segment.
Baldwin finished the day strong, winning the high jump outright with a height of 2.12 meters, tying his season-best mark. Neugebauer however PRed to finish second in the event after also winning the shot put and placing second in the long jump to maintain his hold on first.
Rest and recovery will be the focus as three events remain in heptathlon which will take place Saturday. The 60m hurdles, which Baldwin recently broke the MSU school record for, will be first at 10:30 a.m., followed by the pole vault at 11:30 a.m. and finally the 1,000m at 3:30 p.m.. All events can be streamed on ESPN+.
