EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Athletics and PNC Bank are partnering to recognize the PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month. Throughout the 2023-24 season, deserving Spartan student-athletes will be recognized for displaying well-rounded achievement through leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in competition.
The honorees for April are senior Jordan Hamdan (wrestling) and sophomore Ian Thompson (men's track and field).
Hamdan was MSU's starter at 141 pounds this season and collected a 21-14 overall record, including an 11-5 mark in dual meets, and finished fifth at the Midlands Championships while earning his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships. In the classroom, Hamdan garnered NWCA Scholar All-American and Academic All-Big Ten honors and graduated in April with a 3.45 GPA. He also donated his time at the MSU Madness Trick-or-Treat event and the Salvation Army Toy Distribution.
"Jordan is a highly talented, team focused individual who put in the 'unrequired' hours on and off the mat to be at his best in school and wrestling," said Jeremy Flynn, Associate Director of SASS. "In the midst of a very demanding schedule with wrestling on a national and international level, Jordan did an excellent job of investing in the classroom and finishing strong with his degree in Human Capital and Society and a Leadership of Organizations minor."
A sophomore sprinter, Thompson notched the Spartans' top 60-meter dash time during the indoor season of 6.75, a personal best at the highly touted PNC Lenny Lyles Invite at the end of January. The Dorr, Michigan, native finished on the podium twice indoors, claiming silver at the Wolverine Invite on Jan. 20 after posting the fastest time in the preliminaries. In the spring outdoor season Thompson contributed a leg to the Spartan 4x100m relay squad that finished third at the James Madison University Invitational on April 13.
Thompson owns a 3.71 GPA as a finance major. He is an at-large member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a co-founder of the Student-Athlete Kindness Committee. He also participated in the Teams for Toys wrapping party, the student-athlete food drive, the MSU Madness Trick-or-Treat event, the Suicide Awareness Pin Distribution event, and "Spartan Sunday."
"Ian goes above and beyond in his commitment to giving back to the campus and greater community," said Brianne Wojciakowski, Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development. "In addition to Ian's active involvement in numerous community projects through SAAC and the Student-Athlete Development Program, his passion for service inspired him to co-create the Student-Athlete Kindness Committee, a group of student-athletes dedicated to fostering positivity on campus and bridging the gap between student-athletes and the wider student body through random acts of kindness."
