NOTES TO KNOW:
• Michigan State rose to No. 1 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 1 in the USA Hockey poll this week, up from #3/4 in the polls last week. Last season the Spartans spent nine weeks as the consensus top team in the country, never falling below No. 4 until the final poll of the season.
Â
• Michigan State swept then consensus No. 1-ranked Boston University on the road last weekend by scores of 4-2 and 4-3 (OT). The Spartans improved to 5-1-1 against consensus top ranked teams under head coach Adam Nightingale and are unbeaten against No. 1 teams since the 2022-23 season.
Â
• Game one of the BU series was televised on ESPN2, drawing the highest viewership of a college hockey game on ESPN since 2018 and the fourth-highest college hockey viewership on ESPN all-time.
Â
• Freshman Ryker Lee (1-2-3) and senior Matt Basgall (1-2-3) led the Spartans in points last weekend. Eight different Spartans found the back of the net in the series. Freshmen Lee, Cayden Lindstrom, Eric Nilson and Porter Martone all scored their first collegiate goals.
Â
• Basgall was named Big Ten Third Star of the Week following his performance against the Terriers. The Spartan captain scored the game-winning goal in overtime of game two on a one-time feed from Lee after sophomore Shane Vansaghi made a game-saving play to sweep the puck off the MSU goal line. The game-winning sequence was the No. 1 play on SportsCenter's Top 10 on Sunday, October 19.
Â
• It's the first B1G weekly honor of Basgall's career and the first of the season by a Spartan.
Â
• Michigan State went 4/4 on the penalty kill in game two against BU, stopping one of the more highly touted power plays in the country. The Spartans allowed two goals on power plays in game one, with one coming late in a 6-on-4 situation.
Â
• Junior Trey Augustine was 2-0 in goal for Michigan State against the Terriers, finishing the weekend with a .907 save percentage and making a season-high 31 saves in game two. Augustine is now 8-4-2 career against Top 5 opponents.
Â
• Michigan State ranks #16 nationally in scoring defense (2.25), #18 in scoring margin (+1.00) and #22 in scoring offense (3.25).
• Northern Michigan Athletic Director Rick Comley coached the Spartans from 2002-11 (186-140-39), winning a national title at MSU in 2007. Comley coached Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale for two seasons in East Lansing.
