Opening Statement...
Great to be at the Breslin on a Sunday afternoon. I'll give a lot of credit to Coach (Kate) Achter at Western Michigan. I've coached against her at many places. When she was at Loyola, and she was at Detroit, and she just always does a good job with her team. I know she's going to do a really good job at Western Michigan. I liked three of our four quarters. I thought the second quarter was a lot of good things for us to learn about. When you do this, it doesn't work very well. But three of the four were really good. I thought we set the tone early in the game, and really set the tone for the game. This growth for us is sustaining, and we have a phrase in our team, in our team huddle, that we say, 'Be an every possession player, be an every possession team.' I think tonight we have some growth in that, just being on the same page, dominating the details, and sustaining throughout 40 minutes.
Â
On managing success...
I heard a press conference, I think it was Giannis (Antetokounmpo), a pro basketball player, who shared, 'The minute you think you're sweet, you usually stink the next day. The minute you think you stink, you usually have a breakthrough.' So just don't live in either of those spaces, right? Just live in the space of how do we get better today? How do I learn? How do I take this possession and get better for the next possession? When I think of that, I think of a team, I think that of life. Just exist in the space of what's happening right now. We actually talked today about the beauty and ability of being present. Tate came back, she played with us the last two seasons here at Michigan State, and she was and shared with the team. If she could share any advice, it would be to just be present. That's the art of a great competitor. They're present in what's happening.
Â
On impact and performance from Isaline Alexander...
It's great. She gives us a different look, a different size and versatility. She gets a lot of shots right at the rim. We've been really challenging her to finish. She gets high percentage shots for us to finish, she gets fouled a lot. After the game in the locker room, I specifically pointed out Isaline, because it's really hard to be out for two seasons. Two whole seasons, and just all the pieces that go with that. The mental pieces, the emotional pieces, and then keeping your body ready for when you do return. She's getting her game rhythm. I think tonight was a great example of her getting balance. We did a great job finding her, getting her the ball in the right spots, and then she finished. But credit to her. This is a cool night for her to be out two years, then go 9-for-9 from the field and see that these things, when you're out, sometimes it seems like forever, and now it's right here and now she can keep building from this.
Â
On performance of Kennedy Blair...
It's awesome. I thought she played great. She just does so many things, and she's one of those kids that has a real physical impact on the game. She rebounds the ball. She comes up with loose balls. She's got great hands. And then, she makes the game easier for everybody else. She has a knack for making the right play and getting people the ball in positions to be successful. Very happy for Kennedy. I thought she really had a just overall, just an overall impact of the game, and was really good.Â
Â
On halftime talk leading to efficient third quarter...
You know, I wish I had magic, because if I had magic, I'd use it at every halftime. I just shared that the second quarter was not good enough, and it's not the way we play. In these games, when you get a lead too, there's this real art of playing the right way, and continuing to share the ball and continuing to get team defensive stops. I just thought we got away from that. No magic, if anybody has a magic halftime talk, I'll take it because I'm sure I'm going to need it. But just a reminder that we've got to play the right way for the second half.
