Michigan State men’s tennis duo marks milestone moment with both players seeded in NCAA singles draw.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis will send senior Ozan Baris and sophomore Matthew Forbes to the NCAA Individual Championships held Tuesday-Sunday, Nov. 18–23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The tournament will be hosted by the University of Central Florida and the USTA.
This competition marks a milestone moment for the program, as it's the first time in the modern era that Michigan State has multiple seeded players in the NCAA singles draw. Baris, ranked No. 7 nationally, will enter as the No. 8 seed, while Forbes, who was ranked No. 66 in the national preseason rankings, will compete as the No. 4 seed.
Competition begins in the round of 64, where Baris and Forbes will face off against some of the top talent from across the country in Tuesday's opening action. Forbes will begin competition by facing off against Pablo Martinez Gomez from Vanderbilt at 4 p.m. EST before Baris battles against Jangjun Kim from Virginia at 5 p.m. EST.
Baris is one of the most decorated players in the program, and has proven his talents after an impressive fall slate, securing wins over many other ranked opponents. This is the fourth-straight season that Baris has competed in the NCAA Championships, reaching the semifinals as a sophomore in 2023-24 before advancing to the singles final of last year's NCAA Individual Championships in the fall, getting topped in a hard-fought three-set match by Columbia's Michael Zheng, as the NCAA Individual Championships were making their debut as the tournament moved from the spring to the fall for the first time.
Forbes has shown his talent throughout his fall competition, earning a spot on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10. Both Spartans are looking to capitalize on their momentum and make a deep run in the national tournament.
Both Forbes and Baris punched their tickets to the Individual Championships following their standout performances at the ITA All-American Championship tournament held earlier this year in September.
