SAN ANTONIO – After weather forced the Michigan State softball program to change its plans, the Spartans battled in a back-and-forth loss at Incarnate Word on Saturday, 6-4, from H-E-B Field.
MSU's record moves to 3-8 in non-conference action while Incarnate Word improves to 6-6. Michigan State concludes its time in San Antonio on Sunday when it meets Omaha at Roadrunner Field for the final game of the 2025 Roadrunner Classic at 10:00 a.m. ET. Omaha is receiving votes in the NFCA Coaches Poll and enters Sunday with an 11-1 record.
Freshman Carsyn Cassady (0-1) made her first career start in the circle for the Spartans on Saturday and was relieved by senior Madison Taylor and freshman Ella Cunningham. Cassady allowed three runs (two earned) over 1.2 innings before Taylor tossed the next 3.2 innings in the circle, striking out three and allowing three earned runs. Cunningham got the final two outs of the contest for MSU.
Michigan State's offense was paced by freshman Ava Coffinger who turned in her first career multi-hit effort on a pair of singles going 2-for-3 at the plate. Sophomore Hannah Greer continued to showcase her pop with her team-leading third home run of the season. Every MSU starter recorded a base hit in Saturday's contest. Sophomore Kendall Smiley, junior Sydney Doloszycki, senior Collette Allen and Greer tallied one RBI each.
MSU struck first when a first inning Doloszycki single down the left field line plated junior Hannah Hawley, who rounded the bases from second. Incarnate Word quickly responded however using a two-run home run in the home half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
The back-and-forth scoring continued in the second when a Smiley single up the middle brought senior Mik Anthony home. UIW scored on a Spartan error in the bottom of the stanza to gain a 3-2 advantage.
Michigan State once again tied the game up in the third, this time using an RBI single to left from Allen to score junior Britain Beshears who reached on an error. In the home half, the Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs before scoring on a wild pitch to take back a 4-3 lead over MSU.
Greer's lead-off home run in the fourth looked to start a chain of momentum for the Spartans, tying the game at 4-4. It was Greer's third homer of the season to tie Beshears for the team lead.
Incarnate Word took the lead for good, 5-4, on a bases loaded walk in the fourth and added an insurance run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single.
Michigan State out-hit the Cardinals 10-9 but left nine runners on base during Saturday's contest. Spartan pitchers twice got out of bases loaded jams to prevent further damage by UIW.
