The top notes you need to know about Spartan hockey
•  Michigan State readies for a weekend set against No. 13/13 Michigan.  Friday's game is at Munn Ice Arena, with Saturday's game as the featured Duel in the D at Little Caesars Arena.  The teams each won on their home ice when they met in January, and the Spartans are 72-56-12 in games played in East Lansing.  The Wolverines own a 182-144-24 record in the all-time series. This will be the 30th regular-season game between the teams in Detroit, with Michigan leading in those games, 14-11-4.  Â
•  The Spartans are particularly proud of their successes in the second game of a series over the last two years - which they contribute to their conditioning and strength training with performance coach Will Morlock.  MSU is 9-4-1 in game ones this season and 12-0-2 in the second game of a weekend.  Over the last two years, MSU is 17-9-3 in the first game and 23-4-2 in the back end of the series. Â
• The line of Charlie Stramel centering Isaac Howard and Daniel Russell have skated together in the last 15  games and has 61 points (30g, 31a) in those contests, and combine for 86 points overall (42g, 44a).  Howard has delivered 21 goals and 40 points in MSU's 28 games to put himself squarely in the serious discussions about Hobey Baker Candidates. He led the nation with 10 goals and 18 points in the month of January and overall on the year leads the nation in points per game (1.43), and is second in the nation in both goals (21) and points (40).  Russell is second among Spartans in goals (12, seventh B1G), and leads the conference (second nationally) with seven game-winners, two of which are in OT.  Stramel owns career bests of nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 28 games.  Â
• Hobey Baker and Richter Award candidate Trey Augustine is the youngest starting goaltender in the country for the second consecutive season.  He ranks among the B1G and national leaders in goals against average (2.12, 2nd B1G/13th NCAA), save percentage (.926 2nd/ 13th) and ranks first in the Big Ten and sixth nationally in wins (14).  He is also second in the league in games played (21) and minutes played (1274:41) despite missing four games with World Juniors.v  Augustine owns a 3-1-2 record against teams ranked in the top five in the national poll and  7-3-2 against teams ranked in the top 20 at the time of the game. Â
• Juniors Karsen Dorwart and Joey Larson have skated together for the last 15 games, adding winger Gavin O'Connell for the last six.  Dorwart has a point in every series he played this season and a 8-12-20 scoring line, and 16 of his 20 points have come in Conference play (0.89 ppg).  Larson is tied with Stramel for third on the team in goals (9) and shares the team lead in power play goals (3) with Dorwart and Basgall. Â
 Â
• David Gucciardi scored his third goal in as many games with his Friday score at Ohio State.  His season scoring line now sits at 5-8-13, career bests in both assists and points.  His D partner Nicklas Andrews owns a 2-9-11 scoring line and leads the squad with a +22 rating, which ranks second in the Big Ten and third nationally.  Andrews blocked 14 shots over the last two series, and leads the squad with 39 blocks, ahead of Gucciardi (31) and Matt Basgall (29).
